Default Front Side Window Tint: Can this void insurance in Alberta?

I have my side windows on my tacoma tinted and have had it done on previous vehicles as well. I've gotten the standard $80 ticket and had to take it off as well. I just bought a new A4 and I was told by the tinting company that this can void my insurance because it is an illegal modification? Has anyone had any direct experience with this before?

In ontario there are no set laws for VLT % (Visible Light Transmission), so it's up to the officer's discretion to decide if your windows are too dark or not. The test they do is they hold up a business card behind the drivers window to see if they can see it... or they just simply guesstimate...

35% is legal in Alberta and will not void your insurance! No tint will void your insurance, unless specified by the insurance company

having had to sell insurance in alberta - i can say that as long as you tell your insurance company about your mods, they can't can't cancel you (they might make you get your car appraised) - unlike in ontario, where there isn't an insurer in the whole province that will touch your car if it's modded.

tickets won't void your insurance. a number of tickets, or one really bad one (like DUI) will get your insurance cancelled on renewal, but not voided.

Thanks everyone. I've previously recieved a ticket with 35% tint. Is this "law" written down somewhere that I can access online or photocopy to keep in my vehicle. I've recieved a ticket with 35% tint before (Lethbridge Alberta cops have nothing better to do, I guess.) I will be sure to notify my insurance company of the modification.

I would look up the Highway Traffic Act, at least thats what its called here in Ontario. I have never looked up tinting (or "glazing" as its reffered to) just euro lights on my old corolla. But, if they can give you a ticket for it it must be in the traffic act. They must cite the section and sub-section for the violation, a good place to look it up.

Good call... ok so I looked up the Alberta Traffic Act @
Alberta Queen's Printer
In sections 70 to 71 it references Safety Standard ANSI/SAE Z26.1 but I cannot find a copy of this online without paying $60.
Any advice?

Public library or police station? someones gotta have it for free....

Typical government... learn the law the easy way or the hard, it still costs you money. I guess its consistent with the education system - not one class spent on doing taxes in 14 years. Don't ask questions, just pay your taxes! (even if you dont know how)

Nice... I found some contact information for questions to Alberta transportation and I'm sure this would carry over to some of the other provinces too. I'll post it when I get the final answer. (I'll try to avoid putting any Police, Lawyers or Accountants out of business.) Vince
