haha, yeah it does look like wood, but the coloring and quality varies within the interior. the wood around the shifter looks the worst. it looks very dry and faded.

I feel for you.

I have a 98 as well. This is no wood. It is plastic.
Try this.
Go to Canadian Tire and buy Invisible Glass. Spray it on and leave it for 5 minutes. Wipe it. It will neutralize the solvent that is on it now.
Next use silicone spray and leave it on for 15 minutes. It will add small molecules to your trim and restore it.
Next buy Headlamp Restorer - blue liquid - leave it on for 30 minutes. It will melt the surface to the shine.
Finish it off with Armor All.

OR just buy new trim whatever is cheaper.

This is what it should look like.

Boy I wish I could touch it. In case this is wood you need to go to some custom furniture repair store and ask them for help.

Awesome, that covers everything. I have all that at home. I will do it later on today.

Although isn't armor all "spray shine" a bad product to use? I have heard that it dries out plastics and makes them more susceptible to sun damage and cracking.

Here take a look at these pictures here, I actually think its just wood. No shine or clear involved. Its just boring, old, dried out wood.

Is it a 1998 A6 with the 2.8 motor? Mine was a 1998 A4 with the 2.8 V6.
This comes from the Audiworld model guide

"Genuine wood inlays in instrument panel, center console and door"

As I said, my wood trim was non-shiny and nice to the touch; no fading or cracking.
