My TT Quattro isn't AWD! I bought it not to long ago and just had it looked at today when I brought it in for maintenance. I bought it privately but he had all the records of repairs so I didn't get an inspection. Very stupid move on my part. The rear differential is shot they think. $$$ here we come. --- edit --- it has been fwd since I've gotten it. Didn't know better.

 

The person who sold it to you should be shot. How long have you had it for? Did you phone and ask WHY they had lied to you... that is total BS

I've had it for only maybe a couple months now. I was thinking I was going to phone the guy, but there is a few reasons why I didn't bother. I don't think he knew. He had all his papers and seemed in order. The car was brought in from the states and he had only had it for a couple months himself. I was the first to introduce it to snow. And it was with the snow that the people at the shop figured out there was no RWD, so I don't think I'm going to blame the seller. Other reason I'm not going to call is because == what good would it do? Even if he was aware of the problem, he wouldn't tell me now. But I have to start saving for a used rear differential for aprox. $2000 now.

 

The TT has a viscous rear differential that is only activated under load. If that fluid is not changed religiously every 35,000km, the diff will probably fail to activate, but it may not necessarily destroy it. Make sure that it just doesn't need an overhaul and new fluid.

The Rear Differential (Audi calls it Rear Final Drive) is likely not the problem, the failure is likely the Haldex unit immediately in front of the Rear Final Drive.

The Haldex gets hammered hard in winter weather when running All Season Radials instead if dedicated winter tires. Some folks say to leave the TT in the garage if not running Winter Tires.

It's quite likely the previous owner never knew the Haldex was not working.


On a 2001 TT 225HP, a VAG Scan reported the Haldex not working with the following DTC:

Address 22: AWD Labels: 02D-900-554.lbl
Part No: 02D 900 554 B
Component: HALDEX LSC ECC 0006

1 Fault Found:
01155 - Clutch
04-10 - Mechanical Malfunction


You can verify Haldex operation by hoisting the car, run engine and turn ESP Off, then put car in gear and all wheels should turn. If the rears do not turn then Haldex has failed. The unit can be rebuilt and it's a fairly common failure due to lack of oil & filter changes combined with hard driving.

 

Thank you very much for the reply. Again, I called the shop and they tell me that it is indeed the HALDEX message they got.

This is the first snow fall my TT has seen however, and I have had it on winter tires a few days after the first skiff of snow hit the ground.

What will have to be done if the HALDEX is the case? How big of a job is rebuilding it?

The shop is booked up right now, so I'll have to try to get in within the next couple weeks.

TT01, I am in the exact same position as you: just bought an '02 225TT and I have no RWD with the 01155 DTC. Sucks big time, but I agree with you that calling the previous owner isn't going to result in anything - who on Earth would offer to pay (even partially) for a repair when they can (undetectably) lie and not pay a thing. It's sad to say, but people will rarely not lie when it suits them to do so and they can easily get away with it.

K04, can you tell us how to go about rebuilding the Haldex unit? I've searched the 'net and can't find much other than the Haldex.pdf file, which doesn't have any info. on rebuilding. Also, I can't get the .pdf's in my AESIS to load so that's not any help.
