Audi A-8 Braking Without The Brakes
Q. Hi there, I saw your web site and thought I would send you a question about my 1998 Audi A-8. It has started doing this odd thing when I am coming to a stop, to me it feels like someone is slamming on the breaks before I put them on. Maybe it is downshifting very hard. Once it actually engaged my seat belt.
It does not happen all the time, but seems to be more pronounced after I have driven it for a while, like on the freeway for a distance, then when I go to stop it happens. It is less frequent in the cold weather.
My brother thinks it might be the torque converter while my husband thinks it may be the transmission. Of course they have entertained the thought that the transmission might be low on fluids, but that is a whole different story because as I understand it, it is a sealed unit.
As you can imagine with the cost of a new transmission and or torque converter we want to make certain of the diagnosis prior to replacing anything. I really love my car and would like to repair it. Have you any experience with such symptoms?
Thanks in advance for your time and assistance,
Sincerely,
Theresa
A The transmission is not a sealed unit and the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) level can be checked and adjusted as required. It's not easy, but it can be done.
Start and warm up the transmission until the ATF is between 86°F to 113°F. Then, with the engine running, remove the fill plug (2) from the bottom of the transmission pan. There should be barely a trace of fluid running out. If nothing at all comes out, you can add more ATF through the fill hole. Only ATF with the designation ESSO L T 71141 (color. clear-yellow) can be added.
Let us assume, for the moment, the ATF level is correct. On the side if the transmission is a connector. Unplug this connector and drive the vehicle for a while. If the problem goes away, then it is most likely the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. If not, then you probably have an internal transmission problem.
I would take it to the Audi Dealer and have a Technician drive it with you so you can point out exactly what's happening under the conditions you know the problem will manifest itself.
