Default 1.8T vs 2.0T?

Evenin' all...not yet an A-4 owner, but should be happening real soon! I've got a couple of quick questions to help in my quest. Been looking at a few around the '05-'07 model years...is there any advantage to the 2.0T vs the 1.8T. Is it just the 30 hp gain, or is there better reliability with one or the other? Secondly, was looking at an '05 last night with about 150,000 km on the clock...seems a bit high compared to other A-4's of the same year I've seen advertised. Any problems with the higher mileage?...car has been very well maintained by the last owner, with full documentation of work done by him over the last two years of ownership. Any opinions/comments welcomed and appreciated...Thx, Alistair

Welcome to the forum!

You can't go wrong with either engine, but obviously the 2.0T is slightly more responsive off boost. The blocks are nearly identical – the only major differences are really in the head and fuel system – but both are bulletproof engines that will run a long time. Most reliability issues that arise are due to small failures, e.g., PVC, vacuum lines, various other plastic stuff, etc. The early 2.0Ts did suffer from some major issues –*Google/search forums for high-pressure fuel pump and oil consumption.

150,000KM is getting up there, but it can be okay for the 'right' price. Just realize that a vehicle at that point in its life can require some significant work.

If you need someone to VAG-COM a car you're considering, I can do it for ya'!

cheeba, thanks for the info. The '05 A-4 I referred to seems to have been well maintained, having had timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, plugs and oil pressure sending unit replaced within the last year. It's an auto/tiptronic, any potential issues with the transmission/ mileage? I'm assuming VAG-com is a diagnostic on the vehicle....what exactly can it tell you? Any input on what the right price would be? Seller is asking $15,500.00, which I think is high.....from what I'm seeing around the country, around $13,000.00 might be more realistic....Thks again, Alistair

I think that price is rather high considering it's a 2005.0MY, and not a 2005.5MY; although, used car prices are quite high in SK. I know VAG has had some issues in the past with their Tiptronics, but I would never consider owning a Tip, so I really don't know too much about them. I do know they won't stand up to much in the way of power mods, but that's only a concern if you're planning on going big-turbo.

VAG-COM is diagnostic hardware/software – Google it for more info. I strongly recommend not buying a VAG car –*or any modern vehicle for that matter – without scanning it first.
