Black out headlights
Looking for someone in the GTA to either blackout my headlights or if any one knows where I can buy aftermarket ones from... I am not sure about ebay since they look like really cheap material.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Black out headlights
AFAIK this is illegal in Ontario for street vehicles, show cars are another issue.
See this thread for more info: https://www.audiforum.ca/general-aut...-vehicles.html
"It is illegal to cover your Headlights with any tinted or coloured material or to reduce the effective area of the beam of your headlights.
HTA 62(7) - Drive with headlamp coated / Drive with headlamp covered / Drive with headlamp modified - $85.00/$110.00
Highway Traffic Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8 "

Re: Black out headlights
Sorry i should have been more clear.... I am not looking to tint my headlights but I am looking for some new headlights which are black from inside. I saw a thread on the net in which you can bake the headlights to paint, but I don't think I am capable of doing it. I f anyone else can I am willing to pay for it in the GTA.

Re: Black out headlights
I heard about that being done as well... they put it in an oven to heat up the adhesive, which holds the front cover on... but i'm not sure I would attempt it myself... sounds like you could ruin your headlights pretty quick...

Re: Black out headlights
i have done the clear corner, but taking the lense right off is risky. go to :: a4mods.com :: - The Premiere Audi A4 Modification Guide and Pictures Library theres a write up on how to do it.

Re: Black out headlights
ive seen it done on a pair of 2000 honda civics...
never to an audi...
it took my friends about 6 hours or so to heat, sand, paint, reheat, repaint, dry, and sand the lights to appropriate colour.

Re: Black out headlights
did it in the oven for my last jetta in about 1 hour... was pretty straight foward except taking of the bumper with seized bolt...
i heard the for the A4 though you cant put the headlight in the oven so you have to use a heat gun !!

Re: Black out headlights
Tools needed:
- A conventional oven, cookie sheet, cardboard
- Black spray paint (I used Krylon Fusion)
- Socket set
First, you must take the headlights out. You will need to remove the grill and the small body-colored piece below the lights. This should be very easy.
Once the lights are out, remove everything off of them. All of the plastic pieces, all of the lights and rubber things and hex screws must be removed. Make sure not to mess with the adjustment *****.
Once you have stripped the headlight housings, it's time to bake them in the oven so that the lens can be easily removed. They must be done one at a time. Place each headlight on a cookie sheet with foil or a piece of cardboard to prevent the headlight from melting against the cookie sheet.
As far as temperature, 305 degrees for about 9 minutes works well. Remember, preheat the oven and then once you put the light in there, turn the oven off. While baking try to avoid opening the oven to check on the light. This will prolong the heating process.
At this time and temperature, the lens should pry apart from the housing on the first try. Just take your time and don't rush anything. This is not something that just peels apart super easy. Dont use any tools. Just use hands and start in a corner where its easy to grab both parts. Ask for a buddy to help you me pry it apart slowly.
Once apart, remove the hex screws in the plastic piece in the lens. Pull out the bezel. Pop out the marker and the turn signal lens.
use Krylon Fusion paint. No primer is needed and its designed to bond to plastic and is pretty strong
To prep the area to paint, use a scotch brite pad to scuff it up a little bit just to take a little extra measure. Then, clean it off with glass cleaner. Wear gloves so that you donot get any oils back on the surface.
Paint away and take your time and don't put on thick coats. takes about 25 minutes per headlight to paint it using light coats. This will help prevent runs and drips.
After painting, let each one dry for about 20 minutes.Dont touch the painted surface and carriy them from behind while moving them. Also, be VERY CAREFUL putting the marker lights back in, if you choose to do so. The paint is not fully chip-resistant for 7 days.
Next, put the 2 pieces back in the oven at 300 degrees for 5 minutes to get the caulk soft. Use silicone window/door to put in the seam of the housing. Then, press it back together tightly. put the hex screws in and popthe tabs in place. After that put another bead of silicone all the way around the seams again.
Now, install the headlight assembly back into the truck. SCREW IT.
