Stage 3 first drive.....Woah!

So a while ago my K03's were showing the signs of wear, the O1E trans was crunching when shifted into 2nd especially when cold. The clutch would slip when driving hard and the rear diff would slap the the bottom of the car when launching because the mount was tired. Most would sell the car right then and there.

Not me.

This is a very special car as it once belonged to my best friend who passed away nearly 2 years ago in a motorcycle accident.

Ill never sell this car. I cherish it way too much as it is one of the last places D.S.G. and I laughed together having fun driving way too fast.

Instead of putting a for sale sign on it I called Prince at VAST.

Here is the list....

K04's
ARD inlets
RS4 airbox and MAF
injectors
P&P ceramic coated headers
Vast stage 3 ceramic clutch
Fly wheel (standard)
Piggie pipes
AWE Intercoolers
JHM shifter linkage
High pressure fuel pump
01E trans rebuild kit
Vast ECU programming

ASP engine and trans mounts
ASP rear diff mount
ASP trans stabalizer bar
Neuspeed exhaust

+lost of gaskets, bolts and misc. bits and pieces

The outcome is nothing short of spectacular

The car pulls like a rocket ship. The boost climbs up to 20psi no problem and from there you just kind of hold on till its time to shift again. Today its about 0 degrees and dry. My favourite corner on my way home I'd usually get on the throttle (2nd gear) a split second before the apex, by the time the boost came on I'd be 2/3's of the way round, I'd leave it to the floor and have enough grip to exit and hit 3rd for the straight.

Today things went a bit different. Same gear, same corner, same approach different outcome.

Traction control off, I approached the apex and had the car settled front to back, and applied throttle more conservativly than usual. The car felt fine so I gave it a bit more throttle about the same time the boost started to climb. The front inside tire broke loose first I believe, then shortly after all the others did as well. Not sure in what order because it all happened so fast. The slide felt controlled so I left the pedal down and went with it.

The sensation of a 4 wheel power slide is quite something. Not like a rear drive car at all. This was a bit more intense to say the least. For one there is a lot more noise as 4 driven tires claw away at the pavement for some type of traction. Steering inputs only give a small indication as to the direction of travel and the steering wheel fights your arms as the diff sends power from one side to the other looking for grip.

Once the top of 2nd came round I was still on the road and the car's speed had begun to catch up to the speed of the wheels. The tail came came back in with a snap and the rev limiter was 100 or so RPM's away. Into 3rd and off down the straight smiling ear to ear.

The stage 3 is so worth it.

If Duane were around today I'm sure he'd be there beside me laughing as we teater on the edge of where brute power overcomes traction.... even Quattro traction.

I miss you my friend.

Cheers.

Thanks for the positive comments!

I drove the car home yesterday from my mechanic's house. He is an Audi mechanic at a local dealership that was nice enough to do the work on my car at his home shop. He did a fine job and his general attention to detail was second to none.

The car just plain rips, I described one of many corners. All the other corners were just as much fun.

Today it snowed. It is still snowing. There will be no driving the S4 today.. oh well.

Ill post a bit more as I get to know the beast a bit better.

great story, great modlist, great tuning company

Have fun with it! Go to the dragstrip with that thing and have a nice run. They're monsters at the strip because they're reasonably light, launch great, and of course have a world of torque + top end. Great cars.

Your post is awesome! I registered for this forum just to be able to read and reply. Duane was a very fortunate guy to have such a great friend. Peace out...

Great Story! I just did a similar thing, sans the turbos. My 2001.5 B5 is in great shape, but getting a bit tired in some places. I just order:
-ER intercoolers
-Meth Kit
-Control arm kit with spherical bushings and 034 adjustable control arms
-Metal tie rods
-Vast Stg 3 clutch
-01E full Transmission rebuild Kit
-JHM Solid shift linkage & Bushing
-Apikol rear diff mount & Bushings
-034 snub mount and trans mount
-Almost new 350mm 6pot Brembos

Once I get this all installed, I am going to save for a GT kit and engine build OR some of the new BW turbos. I have to be really really patient though...

Also thinking about a LWFW, but I have heard mixed reviews for this on the B5.
