i wired up my drl for the inspection and then took them off again, it was super easy. search some forums and there should be an explanation for how to do it.
the only problem i had at the border was that i didnt have a copy of a bank transaction to show that i actually wired the amount that i claimed. the lady was a total *itch. they went through my whole car, luggage and everything. i picked the car up after my honeymoon which was 1 week in jamaica then 3 days in toronto. so i had 4 bags a luggage. they went through everything!!! the even opened up a picture frame.
the part that made me mad was that i paid like 3000$ less for my car than american book value. and they thought that i was lying about that much. well, why do you think you buy a car in US....because they are cheeper.
one thing you have to watch, in Manitoba anyway is that when you register the vehicle you have to pay pst on canadian blue book value which was 12,000 more than what i paid, so that hurt a bit.
all in all, it is easy, just have allllll your paperwork in line.

Hey, you don't pay PST on blue book value of car. I am in Manitoba and have brought up almost 2 dozen cars over the last 3 years and never paid blue book on PST. You always pay on whatever the border charged you GST/duty on. If you don't present that blue and white reciept that the border officials gave you then you might be paying on cdn book value, but otherwise you pay on whatever the cdn exchanged value the CDN border officials charged you on.

When i brought in my first car, which was an '04 M3 back in Feb '06 I got grilled for hours in the back room because they thought I was trying to rip them off. I paid $37k US for the car which was $16k less then CDN book value and the customs agent thought i was ripping him off. I had printouts showing i paid US book value for the car, money order receipts from the bank and a e-bay printout, but that wasn't good enough. Apparently that didn't matter cause the car was now in Canada and i should be paying Cdn book value on the car. Anyways, in the end i was let go and only paid on my bill of sale at both the border and at MPI. Also didn't help that i was only 22 at the time. Customs agent specifically said I was too young to be able to afford that car, .
