Default HELP! Hesitation and Poor Performance S4/B6

Frustrated, been dealing with a hesitation in my motor and perhaps rich fuel mix for some time now with no solution as of yet. Here's what's happening:

Year and a half or so ago, had some work done on my drive train and mechanic noticed my AWE Down Pipes were spewing the cat packing when he took them down. Well, I have been tripping a code for -coil packs, 02 sensors, catalaytic converters or rich fuel mix-. I've done all 4 02 sensors, I had new coil packs put on 9 months ago under the recall on them from Audi and now two weeks ago put new down pipes with cats on (wasn't much more than welding new cats in). And upon inspection of the cats, they were burned up! The packing was destroyed so I'm guessing excess fuel is dumping into the cats and igniting in the cat. Also, had valve covers replaced as one was leaking oil and thought I could possibly be fouling plugs from oil leaking into plug etc. Still, car hesitates from time to time on launch and rons rough enough to feel almost as if I'm lacking a cylinder, lots of vibration at some RPM's, mid range etc.

Mods to car (engine at least) include: AWE Down Pipes, Cat Back's, Stratmosphere Cold Air Intake. The car is not chipped and have refrained from doing so until I resolve this hemorrid of a problem!

Taking it in next week to have some more advanced diagnostics run on the car. I'm hoping I have an intake leak somewhere that I'm not seeing. Where I live, I don't have a local dealership so I have to rely on the foreign specialists that aren't instilling much confidence these days. I may pull plugs this weekend to inspect for oil/gas/fouled plugs etc.

Please do yourself a favor and get in touch with JH Motorsport. They are specialists in the 4.2 S4 and they if anyone would have the right answers for you.

AWE downpipes...fried cats are pretty common.

Not sure on the other stuff...I was expecting to hear you had an ASP tune. Sounds similar to the problems another guy I know had.

I'd advise you to sell the 'cold' air intake...it just robs you of power. There's an auxillary radiator RIGHT underneath your 'cold' air intake...and since it's open, you're actually taking in HOT air from the radiator. It increases MAF g/s speed...but it's adding more hot non-dense air, thus is kinda useless.

Interesting take. Problem is at high speeds i.e. north 60, 80 etc. there should be plenty of fresh, cold (er less than 200 degrees) air blowing into the engine compartment to offset any vibration etc.

Was with a master tech today, had the Vagcom hooked in and there's no misfires and fuel mix among other things looks spot on. They said they had a similar problem with a Passat where it wound up being the front axles (one of them that is). My CV joints were torn and suspect my left front bearings are bad. I'm going to do both and if that doesn't work, screw it all...I'll trade it in on a boat, less problems and I'm guessing less depreciation. Doubt I'll be buying another Audi after this one. I love to work on my stuff but not this much, this thing has been in the shop more than my kids in the ER!

true, but it's not theory. It has been shown via performance that the intake is a problem and that the stock airbox is fine.

anyway, hope you get your issues fixed up soon...it's much more fun than a boat (when it's running

p.s. what is the build date on your car? the early build B6 cars had a TERRIBLE flywheel package, and many of them have vibration problems that stem from the flywheel disinstegrating. If the problem is left unattended, it gets worse and worse (vibration) and eventually you can do some serious transmission damage.

JHM also figured this out...and recommend replacing with the b7 flywheel, or their upgraded lightweight flywheel. The B7 got the RS4 flywheel, incidentally. Much improved.

When they fail they cause a nasty vibration and if neglected they can cause the pressure plate to hit the transmission case and crack the actual transmission bellhousing. For this reason we are not recommending reusing the B6 flywheel.
