You need to find out if your engine is what's called an interference
engine. If it is and you have been turning it over you will have bent
some valves probably. Best to find out before you mess with it anymore

on an Audi - it is not the same model as yours, but will give
an idea of what is involved in setting the timing properly.
Does Haynes not cover timing setup for your car?
Unfortunately, if your engine is an interference engine, you might
have caused quite a bit of damage internally already, but you
may be lucky!
