I got this procedure off of one of the audi web sites, I think. It
worked on my '97 A4.

To do this, you will need two keys (but it's OK if you only have one
remote).

1. Put one key in the ignition and turn the switch to the "on"
position (don't start the car but rotate the key to the position just
before you'd activate the starter; the accessories and instrument
panel lights will come on).

2. Roll down the driver's window (just in case!).

3. Get out of the car, holding the 2nd key and the remote in your
hand. With the 2nd key (don't use a remote), lock the door from the
outside, and leave the key in the door.

4. With the remote you're programming, press the button to open the
door. Now at this point, the instructions I had said that the door
should unlock, and that your remote would then be programmed. On my
car, the door did NOT unlock when I did this step. However, once I
removed the key in the ignition, the remote worked fine, and has
worked well ever since.

I bought a remote on ebay after both of mine stopped working, and I
was able to program it using this method. Note that the remotes
changed from year-to-year, so I don't know whether this would work on
a '96 or a '98, but it does work on the '97.

Correct. You need one key in the ignition, you need a second key with
which to lock the door, and, of course, you need the remote you are
programming.

Here is some hopefully useful information I saved from posts from BSK.
BTW I switched my 1997 A4 1.8tq over to a switchblade type remote like this
one on ebay item # 270208323411.

Also I purchased the original remote and both can work the door locks.

Programming remote unit

- Switch ignition ON.

- Lock vehicle mechanically at left front door using second key.

- Press "Open" button on first remote unit (key fob) once (to assign memory
address to remote unit number one).

Note: The alarm horn will sound briefly each time the "Open" button is
pressed to confirm the reception of the signal during this process.

- Wait six seconds after sending last signal, then press "Open" button
again.

^ Doors will now unlock (remote unit is now programmed).

- Lock vehicle mechanically again using second key.

- Press "Open" button on second remote unit (key fob) twice at 1 second
intervals (to assign memory address to remote unit number two).

- Wait six seconds after sending last signal, then press unlock button
again.

^ Doors will now unlock (2nd transmitter is now programmed).

- Repeat procedure for additional remote units (key fobs) to assign memory
addresses number 3 and 4 if necessary.

- Switch ignition OFF.

- Check each transmitter for proper function

This is another method for programming the keyless remote for the A4. It
worked on my two-button non-switchblade remote. These were orginally post by
someone else, but I had to find it through a search.

1. Put 1 key in the ignition and turn it on. (Don't start the car, just turn
it on until the dash lights up.
2. Take the second key and lock the car using the drivers door.
3. Hold BOTH buttons on the remote until the turn signals flash and the door
unlocks. It should take about 5 seconds or less.

increasing the remote range on pre 99.5 (if the under the chin tip
aint working)

Relocate the antenna that comes out of the box under the rear seat, and
thread it up the back of the rear fold down seat. Between the carpeted
backing and the seat cushion material. Then across the top a tiny bit so it
forms an inverted L shape. The antenna is BLACK and is only attached on one
end to the remote locking module.

What does this do.... Gives a HUGE range on what was previously believed to
be a shitty remote. Its not the parts.... its the poor installation of them.
That antenna is used for Frequency Modulation reception, FM is line of site,
Line of site doesn't mean Superman's X-ray vision, RF signals don't travel
through sheet metal too well. So the antenna being under the rear seat, and
atop the gas tank and behind the trunk lid and doors, DOESN'T HELP.

This problem has bothered me for so damn long and I am so happy I fixed it.

Later cars have the remote locking module integrated into their locking pump
which resides in the foam casing in the trunk. Certain years had a technical
bulletin applicable on how to use a kit (new antenna) supplied by Audi to
increase the range. There may be a way to modify the later cars... however I
have yet to experiment with them

Contact your Audi dealer, who can program new keys. At the
same time, your dealer can reprogram your remote -- or, tell
you how.

I suggest for safety sake that you at least have 2 keys to your vehicle!
If you have a vag-com tool, or access to one, you can program the
transmitter/remote with 1 key.
I find it easier to program with the 2 keys.
