Engine Oil
My car is a 2002 A4 3.0 qS. The oil recommended in the owner's manual
is VW 503.00, though the manual also refers to VW 503.01. I'm now
finding it difficult to obtain 503.00: Castrol seem to have
discontinued the oil that I've been using, and replaced it with
another 0w-30 oil (Edge). This, however, is manufactured to VW 503.01
and not VW 503.00.
The car uses a fair bit of oil - about 0.5l/2 months - so I need to
keep some handy and want to be able to buy it locally (it's a bit of a
trek to the main dealer).
Will I be OK using 503.01? Or must I continue to hunt for 503.00?
Does anyone have any opinions of Millers Oil? I hadn't heard of them
until today, but have discovered that they seem to make an oil to VW
503.00. Not sure if it'll make any difference, though - I don't know
if there's anywhere round here that sells it.
Thanks.
Peter.

Recently VW and Audi changed the oil specifications. I have a 2003 A4
on variable servicing which used to run on Castrol SLX Longlife II
which I think is the 503.00/503.01 spec.
The norm is now 504.00/507.00 for the variable servicing which is
Castrol Edge 5w-30 (yes, it is no longer a 0w-30 oil).
If in doubt, ring your local Audi service centre but i'm almost
certain it's Castrol Edge 5w-30 oir equivalent you want. Also, since
I started using this oil, my oil consumption has reduced considerably
- which isn't a bad thing!

AFAIK, there's no oil that meets both of those specs. Well, I've
certainly not found one. SLX LongLife II is what I've been using, but
for which I haven't found a local supplier. It's made to 503 00, 506
00 and 506 01, but *not* to 503 01.

They might be using that for newer cars, but it's not even listed in
my manual, so I won't be putting any in mine.

I'm pretty certain - albeit on the basis of that confusing manual -
that it's not. I'm not even convinced that an Audi service centre will
get it right: it was Audi Stafford that sold me 504 00/507 00. That
might be right for more recent cars, but I'm sure it's not for mine.

Sure, I'd like to reduce my consumption, too, but I'm not risking
putting incorrect oil in.
(Audi Stafford is the better part of 200 miles from home, and I didn't
discover the discrepancy until after I got home.)
Wasn't life simple when you could just chuck 20w-50 Castrol GTX or
Duckhams Q into any engine and know that it'd be fine? And oil was a
lot cheaper then, too. Just as well - my old Mini used to burn loads
of it!

certainly not found one.

Just as well - my old Mini used to burn loads
of it!

AFAIK, there's no oil that meets both of those specs. Well, I've
certainly not found one. SLX LongLife II is what I've been using, but

I have a 2004 A4 and my manual doesn't mention 504.00 or 507.00 but
regardless of that, these are now the recommended oils for my car. I think
you'll find that 504.00 is fine for your car but why not try Audi customer
services or ring round a few different dealers.
