Audi A4 Avant 2.5 TDI (120 KW) or BMW 330d Touring
Hello everyone,
I am about to receive my first 'Firmenwagen' and the decision has come down
to the two models in the subject. Of course the BMW is more costly, but then
it also has a few extra horses under the hood. Overall (for me) this is a
very tough decision.
Has anyone of you been in a similar situation?
Has anyone of you some helpful advice to offer on the matter?
Kind Regards,
Andreas

The people on the BMW ng will probably tell you to buy the
BMW, while those in the AUDI ng will tell you to buy the Audi.
I'm afraid the only way you can decide is to test drive them
both, and decide what you prefer based on that experience.
One or the other will probably "feel" "better" (you know
what I mean) -- get that one. When I drove the Audi, I found
nothing lacking or wanting, it just did not "appeal" to me
as much as the BMW I ended up buying (325TDS). Can it be
just a matter of taste?
As far as maintenance, I figure they're probably comparable,
though I've heard there's more options for having your BMW
maintained outside of the pricey dealer network than there
is for the Audis.
Hope this helps.

That's easy. If you can get the A4 with Quattro, go for it.
On the other hand, I'd probably go with BMW.

I had to choose between the same two cars when I decided to buy a new,
larger one.
First of all, it´s always a good choice to drive the cars by yourself.
Should help a lot.
I did, and the decision fell on the Audi. Personally I like the
interieur and the overall look of that car more than the BMW. Not to
speak about the TDi Engine which runs like hell (no problem for me to
leave my father in law with his 530d behind when I step on it) .
Now I´m a proud owner of a A4 2.5TDi Avant quattro....
But, again, drive the cars by yourself. It´s always a decision ruled by
personal impressions.
I would choose the Audi again and again.....

Have you driven either yet?
I was disappointed by the 2.5V6 TDI, and thought the 1.9 (130) TDI to be
much better value. However, the former had done less than 2000 miles. My
sister drove the BMW and hated it; she went for a 530 petrol instead.
Neither in the same league as a TT.

Yes.

I bought a 330xi over an S4 because:
1) I like the handling of a RWD converted to AWD better than
FWD converted to AWD. To me, the Audi felt nose-heavy and
even more under-steering than the BMW.
2) I've owned BMWs since 1978.
3) I like the more austere interior available in the BMW.
4) Cost is quite close for the 330xi vs. S4.
5) I like the instant response of non-turbo motors.
IMO, it's really a personal choice of which you like best.
Can't comment on which diesel engine is better... Or about
wagon vs. sedan, other than to say that the only real advantage
to the wagons is that the hatch allows loading larger objects
(dimensionally) than the sedan - you can't actually take
*more* stuff, just *bigger* stuff.

Think the BMW is better to drive and the Audi's engine is way out of
the BMW's league. The BMW's diesel motor even sounds great. (Note:
not "for a diesel").
The Audi is just as good an ownership proposition, but its newer
design hasn't translated into any specific benefit over the BMW.

Re: Audi A4 Avant 2.5 TDI (120 KW) or BMW 330d Touring
Hello everyone again,
I should have been more precise. Of course I did drive both cars, actually I
drove the BMW immediately after the Audi. Still the decision was very close.
My impressions (please forgive my sometimes poor translations from German):
- They both have a high quality standard and a good handling.
Pro Audi:
- The Audi has the more appealing interieur. I especially liked the Audi
sports steering wheel.
- The Audi has more loading capacity.
- The Audi is cheaper.
Pro BMW:
- The BMW engine runs better (which is what one would expect from 204 PS vs
162 PS). According to the numbers Audi itself gives - no A4 quattro was
available for test-driving - choosing the A4 quattro instead won't improve
matters much, at least engine wise, as the 4WD seems to smallow most of
those additional 18 PS. And upgrading to quattro negates a large advantage
the A4 has: the significantly lower price.
- The BMW has slightly more space on the back seats.
- The BMW has the better seats. Especially the sports-seats felt more
comfortable that the sports-seats in the Audi, also because they have more
adjustment options.
- According to several car magazines (I did NOT test this myself ) the
BMW has the better brakes.
In the end I have chosen the BMW, mostly because of the impressive engine.
I would like to thank everyone for her/his helpful comments.
