2006 A4 2.0T - Accessories ignition switch position
Hello All,
Just got the subject vehicle this week and am still learning all about
it -- it is my first Audi / German car, so the quirks are still new to
me.
One thing I can't figure out is how to switch the radio on with the
switch in some sort of "Acc" position. Seems to me that the car has to
be ON for the radio to be used -- that is not too smart.
Likewise, there is no horn unless the car is in the ON position.
Again, the same assessment.
What am I missing?

Wayne Moses

German engineering is among the finest you will ever see.
Think about the dead batteries from people leaving the radio on, or how
about that annoying horn that 'Just goes off in the middle of the night.'
There are some things to get used to.
You will enjoy your new toy!

To turn the radio on without using the ignition, simply push the
ON/OFF button in and then out. Just like you were turning the radio
on.

Douglas,
Not sure what you meant by push the button "out" but I figured you
meant push the button in.
So I went to the car and pushed it in -- nothing. Did it twice more --
nothing. Then I pushed it and held it in for a second or so -- on it
came. Pushed it in again and it shut off.
So to turn my radio on without the key in the ignition, press the
ON/Off button and hold.
I guess the horn simply does not blow with a simple press with the car
off. I must confess, I did not press and hold. Must try that tomorrow.
Thanks for the input.

This is true, but they too are not infallible. Case in point are the

digress.

On the subject of leaving the radio on -- with it hot-wired, it *can*
be left on, whereas with an ACC position, the likelihood that a person
would leave the radio on *and* the keys in the ignition is less.

So very true.

I already am, quirks and all.

Correct. And you should also find the radio will turn itself off after some
time (on my S4 it's an hour, iirc).

That's brilliant. You know, the manual I have does not say this.
Still can't understand the horn being inoperable without the key being
in the ON position, though.
Thanks.

I don't understand your frustration. Why would you have the horn
operable when the engine is off ??

Oh, I am not frustrated at this.
It is just that every car I have owned had the horn hot-wired.
Sometimes one is sitting in the car waiting for a passenger and one
prefers not to waste gas idling the car so the car is off. A simple
blast of the horn often produces the desired effect.
Can't do that with this car.
Now I admit I don't often blow the horn with the car off, so it is not
that much of a deal but it is nonetheless strange .... to me.

WOW I learn something new everyday!
That radio trick also works on my '97 A4. Now I don't have to leave my key
in it when my family doesn't want to leave it! <g>
THANKS!
