1997 A6 Avant Multifunction Transmission Switch info
1997 Avant Quattro 2.8L/4HP18FLA
Here's a bit of info about this MFS switch:
1) It's a real PITA to remove
2) It is mounted horizontally behind the driver's side tranny mount
Here's the part numbers:
Audi #4A0919821
ZF #0501 208 143 (this number is not cross-referenced and is a big secret)
The ZF part # is a real secret amongst Audi dealers and used part suppliers.
Applications:
'92 - '94 A10 100
'92 - '94 A10 Quattro
-95 - '97 A6 Avant Quattro
'95 - '98 A6 S6 Quattro
Good stuff to know so that you don't get smoked for $480 for new by the Audi Secret Extortion Society or used parts dealers.

Re: 1997 A6 Avant Multifunction Transmission Switch info
A little more info:
As for removal of the switch, you need a lot of patience.
- Remove left side transmission mount and bracket
- the top two bolts are easier to remove (pop) with an allan key
- the harness bracket bolts are sure to snap off
(you need to drill out the remains once the mount is removed)
- the shift bracket is easier to pry off along with the switch than to try and remove with a wrench (see part #06.310 on diagram)
Here's a link to an exploded view diagram of the transmission.

You may want to save this pdf file to your pc as the link may not stay forever.
