A6 quattro need winter tires?

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
Continental tires are the worst tires ever produced for winter. You can not get any worse than Continental.
These tires are designed for German Highways and since Adolf Hitler wanted everything to last 1000 years he built them using concrete. Continentals are tires designed to be driven on concrete surface. There is no snow in Germany and if some of it would be on the Autobahn they would kick the butt of the local Gauleiter responsible for it. They can not afford it.
During winter Continentals become hard as rocks and at the same time they release some slime and become even more slippery. I had them on my Jetta some time ago and I thought that VW is a problem during winter, but it was that damned continentals.
On Audi it does not really matter what you have since it is a 4X4.
I live in Calgary so we are neighbours weatherwise. I recommend for you Michelin Pilot or Micheline whatever All Season will do perfect. Do not go winter tires because there is no reason for it and you will start hating your car because of the noise, fuel consumption, and bad handling. Sometimes you will not be able to turn your steering wheel due to snow accumulation above the wheels.
In case you want to save cappa dollars you may want to go to Ukrainian Tire and check the tires called PREDATOR. People do not buy them a lot so they are rather cheap at approx. $80.00 per piece.
In fact they are very good tires made by Michellin ( check inside) rated to 190 km/hr.

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
Negatives are increased road noise on dry pavement, my fuel consumption is not noticeably higher, although I believe that it most likely is slightly worse. In all, I would take the negatives given what the positives are.

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
You only need snow tires if being able to stop is important to you. AWD, will help you get going but it does not aid you ability to stop or turn.
I look at it this way. With my $1000 deductible, I can't afford to drive without snow tires.

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
Adam, most of what you post - in this thread and others - is just your uninformed opinion. If you're going post advice for people at least take the time to learn what you're talking about. Tires makes much more of a difference than 2WD vs. 4WD vs. AWD. This isn't my opinion, it's a well-known, and easily observable fact.

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
My opinion Yes
Uninformed No
I drove 1 000 000 kilometers in my life so far.
Just because my views are not popular does not mean that they are wrong.
Yes of course winter tires are better for winter and tires with studs are even better. How about just putting chains on the wheels - this would do it for good.
My debate here is not about winter tires being bad, but about is it worth it to go to the expense and effort to buy and change them back and forth.
My general message is - Michellin Brand - that I advocate and recommend since I discovered it some years ago.
I say that if you use Michellin All Season you can do without winter tires given that you drive on normal roads not in the bush.
I live in Calgary and our daily temperature changes are in the range of 25 degrees up or down, so therefore if I am to buy winter tires I am interested in a tire that is not too heavy.
Mikeh gave a very good advise about the Pirelli choice. If it is Pirelli it would not be too heavy winter tire during the meltdown periods in Calgary. Why did I not think about it first?
If my wife brings the subject we will go to Pirelli dealer first thing.

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
Haha, you ask that and your name is 'Power Drifter'? Use the AWD grip to punch out of a slide. On a slippery surface, RWD rotate the car more, FWD will push - AWD will give you the greatest possibility of being able to power straight out of a slide. The same can be said of a dry surface, but a properly setup RWD will be quicker around a corner due to lower weight and less drive-train loss.

Re: A6 quattro need winter tires?
Then, I suggest you don't formulate your posts with implicit premises that we know nothing about. Stating that someone doesn't need Winter tires because they have "4x4" is misinformation. Full stop. If you meant that you think it's not worth the money, then just say so. My point is, in this thread, and others, you're misleading people, intentionally or not.
