Different problem, but I have a TCM sob story to tell too.
A few weeks ago, while on the way back from vacation in the Maritimes, my passenger-side footwells got soaked with water due to the drain having gotten clogged (it was pouring rain pretty much the whole way). Not 2km from home, the TCM got wet when the water sloshed forward, shorting it out. After several trips to the dealership they diagnosed it and recommended replacement... $1750 + $250 labour!
Anyway while I was waiting for the part to come in, the check engine light went out and I didn't have to do the 'limp mode reboot' thing (engine off, turn key to accessory, press gas, restart) anymore. So I was really hopeful it had dried itself out and the short had gone away. Nope. Just got the call, still coming up with 2 fault codes and they have to replace. Ouch.

Anyway, moral of the story: If you own a 2001-era C5 A6, be *very* careful about getting the passenger-side floor wet (I think they moved the TCM location away from the transmission tunnel in later years).

 

Hi, two weeks ago this MIL PRDNS issue started occuring on my A4 1.8T CVT 2004 45K miles. I have read lots about TCM replacements for $2500 to $4000 and that if you don't do it your transmission will inevitably bit the dust.

Anyone know of a California (Bay Area if possible) audi specialist who can replace the TCM for cheaper than $2,500?

Otherwise I think I'll turn mine in to audi and move to something esle. Not sure I think the transmission should behaving issues at 40K miles.

Get the part# from the dealer... check with an independent mechanic, they *may* be able to get a salvaged TCM from a wreck for much less. If you're willing to park the car awhile apparently there are a few outfits around that will refurb them as well (I didn't find this out til after I replaced mine). Or watch eBay, it might pop up there (I only see Quattro TCMs at the moment, but you could get lucky).

I'm having the same issue. My A4 (2004 3.0 CVT) MIL indicator lighted up about 4 weeks ago. I went to an independent mechanic who was pretty honest in telling me that I should get rid of the car by trading it in because the CVT is a problematic transmission. I was pretty shocked, because I love my A4. Anyhow, I do recommend the mechanic because he seems to be really honest, and good based on the reviews i've read online. His name is Jose, and his shop is called Euro Tech motors in Culver city (Los Angeles area).

He quoted that TCM replacement will cost about 1600-1700 USD.

 

My .2 cents German cars are not reliable as Japanese car, but nothing can top the way German car handles, drive and brake.


The TCM is fairly common problems in audi's, I found a mechanic in Chicago that will do the job for around 1400 including new part, not salvage. I would get the car fixed instead of getting rid of it.

So this seems a bit weird based upon all the prior postings about the TCM but I took my car into Audi, who checked the engine code and of course found that the problem was the TCM. The service chap called me and said that the TCM was covered under the Audi, 8 year, 80,000 mile warranty and that they would replace it free of charge. I bought my audi 2nd hand and didn't know of any warranty of this kind but can't believe that the Audi dealer I went to is the only one who knows about this. Either way, not sure if this info helps any but thought I would mention it for those that have paid for this. I'd cal Audi back and ask them why!!

 

Now this is very intresting for me since i just paid $2K for a new TCM
after all of my efforts gave no results. Can you locate an official Audi
document saying what your saying? I will be glad to take it to my local
Audi dealer...!
