Front linkages and tie rod ends will need replacing. Notorious for '98 and '99 models. My '98 needed complete front linkage suspesion replacement in '05. Audi claims it to be a wear item, like brake linings. ~$2k.

BTW, this car eats brake linings.

Yeah I have read on here (written by one of our smarter scribes) that if you can't afford to fix it, don't buy it. Audi's are expensive to fix. I have a 99 Avant and have put about $1000 into it for minor stuff and this is not at the dealer! But it is a lovely car to drive, not very fast, but smooth and with more bells and whistles than you need. It's a tough choice, deciding to buy an Audi and I don't think that I would make it my only car. Good luck and enjoy.

 

I had the front suspension done at 140K but it was through Audi's recall letter. No charge. People must've done those already? It should be good for another 100K? I got 170K on mine now and so far so good.
If buying one I would make sure those were done. I had 3 recalls on my car (I got it used so it might had more before me) Front suspension (I forgot the details which pieces but it's both sides) Lower bumper facia mounts and rerouting a exhaust line near the throttle body. Also check for dead pixels (when cold and when hot) plus heated steering wheel (they're know to be N/F. Both are expensive to fix but it'll give you some bargaining power.
