A6 Timing Belt

Re: A6 Timing Belt
Oh yeah! And it will cost you an arm and a leg to fix it. What is the milage on the car? They should be changed around 100k, with that also the water pump and the pulleys are changed. I know it is an expensive fix but if the timing belt breaks you will have to buy a new engine pretty much Minimum $4k and the timing belt should be at $1k probably to change. Which engine do you have in the car?
Just an FYI, an Audi is not a car that you wait till it breaks to fix it. It saves money if you maintain it trust me on that statement.

Re: A6 Timing Belt
Yea, you definitely want to maintain your Audi timing belt. I did mine around 160K, along with the water pump & pulleys. At the same time, my mechanic found a bad bearing on one of the flywheels, and the resulting bill was just under $2400.00.
But, as 1move eluded to, waiting for things to break on your Audi isn't the way to go. You take care of it, and it will take care of you!

Re: A6 Timing Belt
You can DIY if you have the skills and tools with the help of a Bentley manual and the online walkthroughs but if you're doing it for the first time it'll definitely take you a while. You do save cash though, all in all its up to you.

Re: A6 Timing Belt
My understanding (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) is that the water pump etc is all done at the same time as the timing belt because once the time to take things apart is added up, it's best to do it all at the same time.
How you get to the fan roller... no idea. Someone out here will, though!

Re: A6 Timing Belt
Sorry for the laps in communication because i was away doing a job,in answer to the question on whether or not to change the water pump with the belt the answer is yes, seing that the timing belt is lifed at around 90k and needs changing before it breaks and mess up the valve gear the same can be applied to the waterpump bearings when considering that the waterpump is also driven by the timing belt, all pulleys and tensioner pully bearings would require the same, look at it this way any failure of any one of these components would mean belt failure too,i am speaking from experience as i caame to a rude awaking when i only changed the belt and dindnt bother with the others whish seemed good at that time i had only don about 4k after the belt change and the water pump bearing siezed up without any warning,i started the car one morning and heard a rubbing sound pulled the bonnet lock to investigate thinking a bit of debris got caught and then the engine cut out, everything looked fine when i took the timingbelt covers of the belet was still on both camshaft cogs on the 2 heads, in my mind it couldnt be the belt because it was not put on long ago and as long as that belt dindt break it would be an easy fix ,futher investigation blew me away, yes the belt was intact on the cogs in one piece but all tooth was stripped at the crankshaft ,the problem a siezed waterpump bearing, all walvels and valve guides were damaged, became a costly job to fix, tell you what i still have the engine rebuilt on the bench in my garage, lesson learned make the sacrifice get all the bits that make contact with the timing belt when you do that job,or prepare for problems as i learned, still its not a bad job you can do it,go to it with a clear head to learn an not just to save the garage cost .

Re: A6 Timing Belt
As already stated, strongly recommend installing a complete Timing Belt Kit that includes all common wear parts that become accessible when replacing the T-Belt.
Specific wear parts will vary with engine model but common are:
Timing belt
Cam Seals
Front Crank Seal (some omit if not leaking but...)
Idler roller
Tensioner Roller
Tensioner dampner
Water Pump
Thermostat
Accessory drive belt
3.78L Jug of G12 Coolant + distilled water mixed 50/50 or max 60/40 ratio for cold climates
If pulling valve covers then install new vc gaskets and might as well do cam adjuster gaskets while in there.
If your coolant reservoir is brown and esp if showing hairline cracks, replace it at the same time.
