1999 A6 lots of play when in gear

1999 A6 lots of play when in gear
its the 5 speed. Shifts fine and doesn't slip out of gear. Except its tricky to get it into 5th and reverse. When its in gear theres about 2" of play. Could it be the bushing on the linkage thats worn out? Or one of the bolts holding the linkage? ball-joint? also how much do you think it would cost for a repair like that? Thanks!
