I have only used 93 since i got the car and i get fantastic mileage as a very spirited driver! min is 91 and for 0.03 more a liter why not! burns clean and is better for your engine!

I bought my first '98 A4 1.8t last year. First month or so I used 91, like it says on the gas cap door. Then, switched to octane 87, thinking that all octane level gas is the same. After about my second fill up with 87, the car started pinging really bad. Performance was also affected. Never used 87 after that. Always 91.
can someone say this/that ^ above with a newer model? ie 2010 audi A4 2.0 premium?
what does

from lots of research on the net... plus what you guys say.. i'm confident that my A4 Audi 2.0T needs at least 91, as suggested by the dealer.
Most recent luxury cars that require 91 can be compatible with 87 as they are equipped with a sensor to adjust their timing belt etc to accommodate the different combustion rate of the lower octane.
However, that does not apply to cars that have a turbo. No matter what, a car with a turbo requires 91.
Knocking sound will be the signal that you're under octaned, and will damage your car slowly in the long run.
And if your new luxury car requires 91 but is compatible with 87 like i mention above, you'd still lose performance/mileage for using the lower grade.
Therefore, I'm convinced that 91 is the way to go for this A4. Even without the turbo, I would not save money by using 87 due to loss of mileage.

There are a few people out there that have run nothing but 87 for years in their 2.0T's, and claim no ill effects.
The reason you lose performance and economy is because the engine retards the timing to prevent knocking.
That said, I'd still say run 91 if only because that's what the engine was designed for, but also because of the losses from 87, and running anything higher then 91, on a stock 2.0T, is just a waste of $$.
