Default Brake "clunk" in reverse after new rotors and pads?

When I purchased my CPO the delear replaced the rotors and pads all around as there was some warp on the originals. They are smooth as silk and very positive however I now get a very distinctive "clunk" sound when first applying the brakes in reverse. I've not had this issue with any previous cars?? Appreciate any thoughts or to hear from any of you who've had a similar issue.

Did this sound start happening immediately after the brakes were service? Might not even be your brakes.

I noticed it immediately after the front rotors were replaced. It's definitely brake related...I put the car in reverse...take my foot off the brake...roll back...not a sound. As soon as I apply pressure to the brake pedal I hear the "click-clunk" sound. It has to be related to the pads moving I'm thinking? Don't get the noise when applying brake forward. And I don't get the noise if I continue in reverse and apply the brakes a second time...only on the first application rolling back.

Try using that "quiet" compound, it's like silicone sort of you apply on the contact patch of the pads from where the piston touches the pads

happens on my 2010. I believe it's been reported on the forums too but nobody has ever found an explanation for it as far as I could tell.

The sound best described on mine is like a metallic object being thrown up the wheelwell/body of the car

Hi All,

My 2010 does the same thing. I thought it was the transmission but reading through this made me realize it only started when my front brake pads were replaced a few months back. If anyone has information on this or how to make it stop, please do share.

something to do with the steering wheel column or something. I had that in mine, brought it in, and they replaced the steering wheel hose and it's been gone ever since. It's scary when you first hear it. I don't know if that helps.

I replaced the pads on my Q5 last month, and have noticed this knocking / clunking sound. I immediately thought is was something particular to the brake job. I've done many brake jobs, but the Q5 brakes were a little tougher, and I wondered if I did something wrong. I think about it frequently, and am thoughts noware that the noise is related to the bracket that holds caliper taught. Without that bracket, the caliper moves quite a bit, even after it is all bolted up. I wondered if the bracket was bent or re-installed in a manner in which it allows movement of the caliper which did not previously exist. That would explain the noise only during braking applications.

Any thoughts, especially from someone who has performed the DIY brake service

Does it happen on 1 side or both?? I think I'd remove a wheel and get someone to apply the brakes and jiggle the disc and see what shakes. If it happens when you reverse try apply the brakes get the clunk then continue in reverse again and see if it happens again If it does I'm not sure if it doesn't you have something moving back and forth as you change directions. Like I said shake things with the wheel off you should see it. Could also be suspension related too.
