I filled up this afternoon, pump shut off @ 53.11 litres, my tank according to manual (since it's a 3.2L) should be 63 L, good to know that with 40DTE I have ~10 L of gas left? weird.... seems like it shouldn't be that far apart?

Question Re: A4 gas tank size

More than once, I have put more gas (as reported at the pump and on my receipt) into my 2001 A4 Quattro than it's rated tank capacity, which is 15.6. I believe actual capacity can exceed (or be less than) 3% rated capacity, and so far the amount put in does not exceed 3% of rated capacity, but I have had 5 to 10 miles remaining on the car's computer. Has anyone else noticed this discrepancy?

Take a look at the bottom of your gas gauge-it reads "R", not "E". At that point you have an 8 liter reserve of fuel. I've also driven below the 0 km DTE, but even though I know that there are 8 liters in the "reserve" I'm always anxious to refuel at that point.

Thanks for trying, but I am not using the gas gauge, and the problem is that I appear to be taking in more gas than the tank can hold. I use the on-line computer, which estimates how many more miles I have to drive. My tank is rated at 15.6 gallons, I took in 15.825 gallons and I still had 5 miles to drive (according to the on-board computer), so I ended up with a little over 16 gallons of gas in that 15.6-gallon tank. I never top off.

Even accepting a +or- 3% error rate, I am beginning to wonder if the gas station has rigged its pumps. (Inspections need only take place every 2 years & a error rate per pump is allowed, with a -2% average for the station. By the way, my fuel gage, which I do not rely on, has a big fat red E, left bottom. If you were correct, then the gas station where I fueled up has rigged the pump, and has committed rather serious fraud, which I doubt.

I have the opposite problem (see below in this thread). I get more gas into the tank than it should hold. Once, I fueled up with too little gas to fill the tank. It was clear to me that the pump shut off before the tank was full, so you may have been using a pump with a hair trigger.

The tank is 65L.
Your computer lies to you and says you can drive 0kms left but there is about 8-10L of gas left in the tank. It's a safety feature to insure you do not run dry. Same thing for the speedometer it is calibrated fast on purpose. Try it out, 100km/h will be 97km/h on almost every German car I've ever driven.

I've been stranded before and I pushed it to the limit. In the US most gas stations are not 24hrs... I put about 62L in there.

I see that I am posting in the wrong thread. My problem is that the gas station pump is giving me more gas than the tank should hold. Everyone posting here seems concerned with too little gas from the pump filling up the tank. I think I found another thread that is more to the point.

By the way, of course there is still gas in the tank when the computer reports 0 miles left in the tank. I have driven it at 0 miles. Once I managed to coax it back to 5 miles remaining (coasting down a mountainous road, and not running out). It's an estimate. And I am estimating how much gas is in my tank, adding what I just put in at the gas station, and wondering how much measurement error is tolerable or is the gas station rigging its pumps.

On the subject of quirkiness, anyone else noticed the first bar of the fuel gauge goes down really fast then it slows down before hitting the middle bar.
