Rattle/Noise coming from defroster/dashboard area
2006 A4 B7. Have a strange rattle type noise emanating from what seems to be the defroster / windshield area. On perfect roads it is silent, but over any type of rippled or uneven roads it becomes very audible.
Best i can describe the noise is that it definitely sounds like its from a piece of trim or plastic hitting/chafing something. It seems to get worse/better according to temperature and moisture.
I did shove a cloth shammy in between the windshield and the dashboard, and it seemed to have disappeared for a while, but this is an elusive noise.
Anyone experience a similar problem? or can suggest a fix that doesn't involve the dealership's $120/hour diagnosis fee or taking the dash apart?
Thanks a lot guys!

Check the hinges on your glove box. I too had an elusive rattle that drove me mad for the entire winter. Just last month I noticed that one of the hinges on my glove box was cracked.
I can't imagine anything between the dash and windshield that could cause a rattle.

Just an update here. The rag shoved in between the dash and the windshield in the middle fixes the noise. I'm going to try to put a piece of black foam or felt in between there, but its not the most accessible crevice in the car.

Hi guys,
I got some similar problem on my 2006 A4, noise/scratch it's coming from the left side of the dashboard (driver's side and closer to the windshield) even if the climate is ON/OFF. I took out the dash clocks and checked inside but found nothing. It's more like a plastic scratch which appears sometimes when I'm not accelerating and the road surface is a bit bumpy.
It's really annoying sometimes.
This seems to be a current problem al lot seem to be having... Would this be due to the cold coming in and the plastic has reacted with the temp?
Hey guys...this is my first day on AF and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to have experienced this problem. I live in NYC and recently the cold weather has set in. I noticed the same rattling from my windshield/defroster yesterday. It does seem like its affected by cold weather since I haven't noticed the rattling before this...any updates on what the noise might be caused by?
i have the exact same noise on my 2005 b6 too... seems to happen when it's really cold, then eventually dissappears when the car has been driven for a while... im wondering if everyone who is having this problem owns a turbo engine (1.8t 2.0t) and not the NA (3.0 ,3.2)?
I have that too. I kinda want to get in there and wrap loose things up with some foam tape. or insert tape in between small clearances. does anyone know how to remove the dash?
