Engine pulsing when cold

Re: Engine pulsing when cold
Thanks ... I think i will have to invest in that as my check engine light comes on weekly, then goes away after a few days ... other than the pulsing the car seems to run great ... it is certainly alot of fun.
I think I was in the minority the other day at work when I was all smiles when we FINALLY got our first snow of the season!

You may be able to find someone locally with a Vag-Com unit. If you do invest in one you should have some portable laptop/netbook running Windows XP or Windows 7 with a USB port. It's definitely helpful as it will diagnose every problem code on your vehicle, even ones that don't show up on your CEL/MIL. I have the HEX+ USB unit and it was just under $400 to my door. There are units available off the Internet for around $20, but they don't allow full diagnostics and only work on older models.

Re: Engine pulsing when cold
i have a 2006 audi a4 and Ive had the exact same problem for about 2 weeks. The first week and a half on cold starts the car sounded rough and didnt go over 3000rpm but no check engine light. Then the engine light came on and i took it to my machanic. he checked the codes and told me it was a cam follower warning and to take it to the dealership.
When i took it in they checked the cam follower and it was soo bad that its affected one of the pistons. Because there is currently an extended warranty on this issue everything is getting fixed by audi canada even though i dont have a warranty. Yesterday they give me a loaner car to drive until mine is fixed. On the last call i was on they told me the parts are all on back order and worst case they might need to change my entire engine.
Moral of the story is if you are having this problem take in into your dealership ASAP. If you catch it early all youll have to change is the cam follower and not the pistons or engine.

Re: Engine pulsing when cold
Plan to leave your car over night at the dealer on a day when the temperature is going to be -7 or below over night and in the morning, or whatever temp you find this issue to be at. And go with them for the test drive and tell them how you drive to replicate the issue.

Technical Service Bulletin Transaction No.: 0
32 Shudder or RPM fluctuations while at cruising speed Release date: Feb 3, 2012
Condition
Customer may report shudder or RPM fluctuation while at cruising speed in 4th, 5th, or 6th gear.
Technical Background
Torque convertor clutches may have excess slippage while cruising.
Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
1.
Check and verify that the software is at the highest level using TSB 2028053, 37 TCM software update for downshift concerns or 2028279, 37 Shift concerns when slowing vehicle. Also, check that the fluid level and condition is clean, full, and matches the required color per the applicable TSB.
Tip: If needed, update the software of the transmission and change the fluid before proceeding with this TSB.
2.
Test drive the vehicle to verify the concern is present.
If the concern can be duplicated, verify there are no fault codes stored for misfires and watch the Measure Value Blocks in the ECM to verify no misfires are seen when the condition is present.
3.
Check MVB 7 from the TCM. Verify Field 3 is reading control and record the slip count from Field 4 while the concern is present. The slippage of the TCC should not exceed 120 RPM in MVB 7 field 4 while the convertor is in control mode. The RPM surge should coincide with TCC slippage. If this reads higher than 120 RPM, the torque convertor should be replaced.
Tip: The TCC slippage will vary when in open TCC mode and should read 0 when in closed TCC mode, this is normal. Replace the convertor for high slippage when the TCC is in control mode (above 120 RPM) or for any slippage when in closed mode (MVB 7 field 4).
Tip: It is not necessary to receive a Repair Authorization to perform this TSB.

Re: Engine pulsing when cold
i have an 06 A4 6 spd, and i'm getting something similar to this situation. Theres been a few times in the past few weeks when i start my car, it starts kinda shaking. Wasn't sure what was going on so i just turned the car off after it would shake for 5-10sec. I start the car 10sec later and its fine again. Not sure what the problem would be. I went into a shop just yesterday to buy some oil and filter for an oil change and was chatting up with the guy and he had asked me what mileage is on my car. I mentioned it was just over 120k and he suggested changing my cam followers soon, likewise with my waterpump and timing belt. Not sure if those things are leading up to my shaking at all.
On a side note, i've noticed my car sometimes take a long time to warm up on colder days. What i mean by that is my gearbox is very stiff and sometimes won't get into gear and very hard to shift unless i let the car warmup for about 10min. Anyone know what the problem may be?..

Re: Engine pulsing when cold
I have a very similar issue, must be related.
My car bounces about 200RPM at cruising speed. no issue accelerating, but as soon as I hold a speed, the rpms bounce and i can feel the car speed up and slow down with the rev.
I'll jot down this TSB number. looks like its time for a dealer visit. Is this something i will have to pay for?
