Timing Belt Job is $1400 reasonable
Hi Guys,
I'm doing my timing belt next week. I got a quote that appears to cover everything, belt, rollers, water pump. Is $1400 reasonable for my 2004 A4 3.0 or am I getting hosed.
As always I appreciate all comments.

$1400 is a good 4-500 more than I've ever heard. If you have the time and are mechanicly inclined I'd recomend doing it yourself. It's a great way to get familiar with your engine and will leave you feeling quite accomplished. I did my first one in around 6 hrs taking my time and can do one now in under 3.

Well my choice are $1,400 with OEM Audi parts or $1,200 for aftermarket Bosch parts. Should I save the $200. Should I be concerned about the quality of Bosch parts?

Re: Timing Belt Job is $1400 reasonable
I had my timming belt done for $750 on my 01 TT and for $875 on my 2.7T A6... note that to do the belt on the A6 you have to remove the entire front end of the car.
So i dont see why it would be so much on a 3 liter A3.

Apparently it's not just the belt. They replace the rollers, thermostat and water pump. Now, I'm just not sure why I should replace parts that have not yet failed. Seems strange to me....
The story is that these parts will fail and should be replaced with this service. Of the three companies I spoke to, they all told me the same thing. Maybe that's why my quote was high.
When you did the work on your A6, did you just do the belt or the thermostat and water pump too.

It's pretty standard to replace the thermostat and water pump. To get to the belt, you will will have to remove these parts anyway. Might as well replace them too.
But i've searched the Web.... random part site shows :
A3 3.0
Water pump : $214
Thermostat : $15
A6 2.7T
Water pump : $184
Thermostat : $15
So OK, your timming belt change should be $30-40 more then mine

I've been doing more research and apparently the 3.0 is a **** to work on.
