V6 Overfill Oil
 

I just did an oil change on an A4 B6 V6 3.0l and I think I may have put about 0.3-0.5 litres too much oil in because I didn't test the level on a flat surface.

Does anyone think this is a serious problem? How much oil does your V6 usually take?

Although overfilling is not recommended (says so right on the covers), you should be ok. You will probably notice some smoke from your exhaust for a period of time. If you have access to an extractor you can remove the precise amount that you are over.

As long as your crank throws aren't actually dipping into the oil, you should be fine. I don't actually know on the 3.0L, but 0.3-0.5L shouldn't raise the level in the pan to the aforementioned level.

Now, if you have a diesel, overfilling can be disastrous! If the level gets high enough to be sucked into the PCV, the oil will travel into the intake, then combustion chamber, and since diesels usually have high enough compression to combust engine oil, the engine will runaway - even if you turn the key off!

REALLY?! So could i filter my old synthetic oil and use it in my TDI?! lol

Overfilling by 0.5 liter is not a problem. You will have no difference at all. My 2.8 takes 6 liters.
You will not smoke at all. The only difference is that your oil temperature will be a little higher and I do not know why this is but it does not make any difference.
Please let me know what your oil temperature is. I expect it to be 103 to 105.

Haha, yup! It won't turn out too well, though. Given the proper fuel delivery system, the high compression ratio of diesel engines mean that you could run a variety of combustible liquid fuels. Looking at the chemistry of diesel, biodiesel, and SVO (Straight Veggie Oil), the primary organic compounds are nothing alike!

That aside, I used to always run B5-B20 in my TDI: extra lubricity, increased cetane, and reduced odour (which matters a lot more if you're running cat-less).

so how may liters does the 3.0 take

is it 6l or more??... some guys says 6.8 quarts.. which is i think a tad over 6L

Depends what filter you use. I find 6.5 liter just fine, but I sightly overfill.

The book says capacity is 5.8 qts

I filled it with 5.8 litres so it really wasn't a big deal

I also asked an Audi dealer tech and he said if it's a real overfill white smoke and weird engine performance would be apparent

But he said with a slight overfill not to worry since the V6 burns the oil at such a high rate anyway

I have a 3.0. Don't worry, it will burn of that excess oil in no time. ;-)
