Temp Gauge problem -- continue...
Hello,
Back from "Temperature gauge -- please help!". So: changed temp sensor (70 bucks), then changed thermostat (another 250CAN). The problem remains the same: the temp gauge fluctuates randomly while the car is still cold (didn't reach 90C). When the gauge reaches 90C (after some 15 min driving) it stays there all the time.
Can't figure out what else can cause this problem... Any thoughts, please?

Are there TWO thermostats? could you please explain where the second thermostat is located? I changed the one which is between the radiator and the engine.

Can it be just a normal behavior for the gauge and it should not stay steel at 90C? When it is -5C (like now in Toronto) and I drive on highway I see the gauge moves down to approx 80C. Then it goes back to 90C after some time. But when the engine is cold (and this what is bothering me) the gauge goes to 90C in really vague way (goes to 70 then back to 50, then goes to 80 and back to 60-70, then suddenly goes up to 90 -- this can repeat). Does the gauge on your car behaves like this or it goes slowly but without jumps to 90C and stays there steel all the time? Thanks!

take it to the dealer. there is a little known warrenty which covers a4s under 10 years old and less than 160,000k
for the temp gauge not reading right.
as it is critical to the emmissions control audi extended the warrenty to 10 years. i have the letter from audi if your dealer wont play ball.

I had the same problem on my 3.0. As my car was warming up the temp gauge would climb, fall, climb so more, fall a bit and then settle when the car was properly warm. It happened for about 4 weeks last winter, and then the problem just went away.
If I were you, I'd just leave it and save your $$ for the next issue. We all drive Audi's so we know there's always a next issue.
