I didn't want to stick this in the other thread by M.phelps5 because I'm not certain it's the same problem and mine is with a standard transmission.

I'm noticing today for the first time that the engine appears to be revving up about an extra 500 RPM or so randomly after shifting before returning jumping back down. It doesn't happen even shift, and as far as I can tell it's done it shifting into 2nd, 3rd and 4th. I haven't had the opportunity to open it up into 5th just yet but will later tonight.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any similar problems and if so, what the cure (and how expensive) it was.

Might be a slipping clutch... depending on mileage but more specifically on how the car was driven (foot resting on clutch pedal all the time) the clutch disks may become worn really quickly...

 

Clutch Switch over revving - possible quick fix rather than replacement

Could be a clutch switch problem - have had that occur with my B7. Link above is for the A3 but would be pretty similar for the A4

 

I'm wondering if it may have more to do with something on the accelerator side of things. I can manage to replicate the problem while in gear.

If I accelerate hard, it will do it.

 

If you are not feeling a slight acceleration and just revving (500RPM can mean a significant pull depending on gear) then i wouldn't think it has to do with acceleration.

If it happens in any gear, it seems logical to think about worn clutch plates... then again, mechanics never seem to be logical but i feel this should be just a clutch plate problem... it is much more common than we think, people driving with their foot (unnoticed) on the clutch pedal. That will wear a clutch in 10K KM or less...

The clutch switch is a possible candidate too... however i didn't read the symptoms from the post so it's hard to tell....

Quick throttle body adaption might also be needed. Not directly related to symptoms shown but is something that be done quickly with VCDS.

 

There is a bit of a pull when it does happen, so there is a slight acceleration, almost a boost, if you will.

 

In that case, i don't think the clutch plates are the culprit... sounds like an electronic problem rather than mechanic...
