Default Maintenance cost + depreciation = new car payment

I bought a 2005 Audi A4 Avant 1.8T 6sp manual 70,000kms 2 years ago for $25K out the door. Taxes, warranty, etc.

Since then it has probably depreciated about $10,000 and my maintenance costs have been $5300. Divide those numbers by 24 months and you get $637/m. I might as well have owned a new car!

arg!

Yup. That is why I only lease European cars.

True but at the end of 3 years you would have had to hand it back and get another one.

In the next 2 years, your depreciation is probably now 2000-4,000 and hopefully no major maintenance. All boils down to whether you want a lease payment of whatever amount forever or be able to buy a car, keep it for some length of time and not have any payments for some of those years. All up to your own ability to support a cashflow and your desire to always be in a new car.

It all makes sense now, but think of it this way, how much would have a brand new car depriciated over those two years? Its a kick in the nads either way

I got an 03 1.8t 5-speed for $12,000 with 120,000km with warranty as well. Doesnt even seem worth paying an extra $13,000 for another 50,000 worth of km. Wowww.. you could buy two of mine and it was mint from the dealer.

I got mine 2 and a half years ago.

I have bought brand new and financed, I have leased brand new, and now I have bought used.

Out of all three scenarios... When it comes to luxury cars (Audi, BMW, Merc, Cadillac) it is just best to lease them.

The buy point A4rob has seems to be the sweet spot. kudos to you on getting that deal.

I'm heading to the VW dealership today to see what sort of deals they have on TDI models. I could honestly care less about luxury cars now. All I want to to do is ride my motorcycle to California or on a racetrack. A decent TDI will be great at towing it around.

there's no possible way it is 'best' to lease them. That way you're eating the worst depreciation period CONSTANTLY...after 3 years you have to eat **** again on another new car.

Second of all, 2 years ago was 2009, and you paid $25,000 for a 4 year old B6 A4? That tells me you overpaid, incredibly, during the worst financial crisis in 50 years. A friend paid $23,000 for a 2005.5 S4 with 95,000 kms on it. It is now worth about $15,000. He has paid $2000 in maintenance (oil, one small repair) so his total cost of ownership was $10,000 were he to sell today. That's $10,000 over two years, or about $368+tax.

If he were to lease a new S4, it would have been $1200+tax. If he were to lease a new 2009 A4 it would have been $675+tax.

You need to re-evaluate where you're buying your used cars from.

sakimano that was an out the door price which included GST, PST, warranty, inspection. The actual price of the car was $20,762

Your friend got an amazing deal on a 2005 S4. the cheapest ones I saw at that time was $29,000.

that was the price + gst on top of that (private sale)

if you had a warranty, why were you paying $5,000 for repairs? I just all around don't get your math. Something's not right.

The warranty was for the drivetrain only. and the maintenance I had done was exactly that maintenance. The warranty was a complete waste of money, I did not do my homework on it. costly mistake.
