Default How much life is left in my A4

Hi guys,

My 2004 A4 3.0 with 125,000 K's on it has been a nightmare recently. Am I just going through a rough spot or should I take it as a sign to get rid of it and move on.

2010 Work:
Timing Belt - $1,300
Ignition Coils - done under recall
Fuel Pump - $700
Wiper Motor - $450

2011 Work
Steering Rack - $1,200
Water Cooler Reservoir - $200
Flywheel - $1,000 + (it's going in next week)

Total: $4,850

Maybe it's just me but I think that almost 5K in repairs over the last 12 months for my car is a bit much.

I don't know where you are getting your work done but them prices are really high. I bought mine with 150k and here is my summary:

2010 work:

Timing belt + Head Gasket seals + refilling of A/C: $950 (had them done at the same time)

Heater core flush: $50

17" alloy rims + snow tires (slightly used on kijiji): $600

So considering the tires are not a repair just forked out $1000 (I did not include regular maintenance, filters and oil changes)

2011:

Replacement of cam shaft sensor: $270 (includes $110 to have the car towed... it wouldn't start)

Replacement of windshield: $280 (the only item I paid tax on)...

I suggest you start shopping around and get your work done elsewhere or something because it looks like somebody is bleeding you dry.

i have to agree with the above... looks like you are paying almost double what you should be for a lot of those repairs... $700 for a fuel pump!?!
anyway, i think you just hit a rough patch.... usually the 3.0 is a fairly reliable car. and the timing belt is not a repair, but routine maintenance, just like an oil change. also, the fuel pumps tend to go after a while on these cars, so since your fuel pump and timing belt are now done, why would you sell your car to someone and basically give them a gift of a car that will not need much maintenance for the next few years?
as always, how long the car lasts depends ultimately on the maintenance you give the car. take proper care of it and do the proper service, and your car will last much longer.

The funny thing is that I treat this car with kid gloves. Yes, I agree that I got hosed on the $700 fuel pump. But what could I do. My car died right in front of Mississauga Audi so I paid full dealer price.

Hey,
I had an 03 A4 3.0 and drove it to 183K before i sold it without changing a thing (including timing belt). They are pretty solid.

HHmmm. Maybe I'm just unlucky? Honestly my car is regularly maintained, I keep it really clean, garage parked every night. Maybe she's just high maintenance. LOL

In theory, if rust was never an issue and you had unlimited funds a car will last forever.

Let me ask you. Do you like the car? Does it give you enjoyment when it does perform well? Do you want to get a newer model? What is your threshold in expenditure before you say - enough, getting a new model?

Only you can answer these questions. Some of us have spend very little in maintenance and repairs and others have spend quite a bit. There doesn't seem to be any sensible rhyme or reason.

Let us know what you do and why?

these engines are pretty bullet proof.

but of course when things do break on Audi's they cost quite a bit more money then say a chevy and if you cant afford the costs then its time to switch.

Imo with any used car your going to spend at least $2000 per year, especially with european cars who's parts cost and labour are that much more.

With that being said if you do regular maintenance and dont have a lemon this thing will last you easily up to the 400k mark. Saw one for sale the other day at around 435,000km.
