Default Chipped Engine Burning up Cats!

I chipped the car when I bought it, catalytic converter burned up & had to be replaced.

Yesterday it threw another cat code. Probably hasn't even seen 500kms on this one! The mechanic says he can install some kind of fooler for it that retains the cat, otherwise maybe a test pipe?

What does this car really need to run no codes with the chip?

I'd suggest you run a relocated HFC (call me a tree hugger if you'd like). On my B6 A4, I ran BT setup along with an MTM DP/ relocated HFC. This allowed space between the turbo and cat and was strongly recommended due to the higher temps a BT throws. Never had a problem with it and FYI, a larger DP with HFC provides better performance and sound ! Another alternative is an O2 spacer.

That said, depending on the software vendor, you dont need any add'l hardware. Pretty sure REVO and APR has software that "fools" the system into thinking all is well.

Sorry I haven't been around here long enough to know what all the letters stand for...

MTM/DP? = something dual pipe?

HFC? = Cat?

MTM = company name/manufacturer http://www.mtm-online.de/en/home
DP = down pipes
HFC = high flow cats (catalytic converters)
Cat = catalytic converter

I would be curious as to what is causing the cat code on a cat with only 500km.... Perhaps you should do some deeper looking. Are you burning oil? Coolant? Any mods besides being chipped? Are you using premium gas? Are you buying your gas at a discount station? When you changed the cat did you get new o2 sensors?

I didn't get new sensors when the cat was changed, but I am always running 94 octane.

I'm gonna call the shop this morning & see exactly what codes were being thrown. I talked to a guy at 034 motorsports yesterday & he said that it sounds like a cold start issue (& it has been cold here in AB!). Something about the cat not being up to operating temp before the sensors get their readings. They sell a spacer specifically to remedy this when you go to a hfc, but he said that it could happen with the hotter tune as well.

Here is the part:

It was specifically the Cat Inefficiency code, which points right at the downstream O2 sensor. Im gonna try the spacer.

Should I put in a new sensor while I'm at it?

I would try just the spacer for starters.
