^^^ I wish it were that easy lol!
When the courts ruled that the process of making hydrocracked oil fit within the definition of synthesis, it was game over! What I wonder though, is why Canada does not step in and challenge it for goods sold here? At the very least, they should have to specify group III, IV, V or whatever it may be. Another part of the problem though is API which restricts (arbitrarily it seems) the amount of additives (namely phosphorous) for oils it will certify. This is why amsoil is not API certified on most blends, but they put high amounts of phospherous in so the oil will last for those 40,000 km intervals. The same is true for many euro oils. More additive = longer oil life. And I HAVE run amsoil up to 40,000 km several times, and up to 32-35,0000 km regularly in my taxis.

I called Precision Tuning Motorsport on Keele st. for an oil change as they are closer to my desk office than Independent. They will do the oil and filter for $80 (slightly higher than Independent at $72), but saved on driving and gave me a choice of Lubro Moly or Motul. They also sell the 5L jug in the store, $60.

I chose to use Lubro Moly as someone here suggested it reduced the rate of oil burn. They were correct.

I have put 2400 km. on the 2.0T and the mark is about half way down the add area on the dip stick. The Motul oil is also very good, but it dropped to a similar level at about 1800 km. The worst rate of oil burn for me was Quaker synthetic, it required 1.5L to be added at 2000k. after the oil change.

Hope this helps,
al

Forget QMR in Brampton, I stopped by to get a 5L jug of Lubro Moly 5W-40 while in Brampton and was quite disappointed. The place is barely a store front, dark, dirty and complete disarray. it was closed when I arrived at 11:00 am, then a guy showed up.
He told me the web site price is incorrect. Now the price was $48, and they do not carry any stock.

I will purchase Lubro Moly from Precision on Keele St. for $50 tomorrow.

Just in case you need more confirmation about M1. The quote below is from a Benz forum. It's obvious that others have followed this approach, quietly reformulating for N America. They are still good products, but if you are think you are getting a full synthetic(any brand) and it's at a great price, some homework is in order to check! They certainly don't make it obvious that it's group III.

We stumbled across the double secret US labelling scam when checking with Mobil tech support after noticing a significant difference in the internal condition of race engines that had similar hours on Mobil 1 and true synthetics. As Detane reported, they confirmed that its a dino base with a synthetic additive package, and that it is labelled as a true synthetic in the US market only.

Mobil 1 is still a good oil. Its used by most of the German marques as OEM oil, including MB and Porsche. For general applications its perfectly OK. There's a world of difference between race applications and normal road use. Oil temps, rev limits, and the amount of time at full throttle are far higher that are ever seen on the road.

I use Redline synthetic in the race car, but Mobil 1 is perfectly fine oil for a street car IMHO. True synthetics are spendy, and for my money there is not enough of a cost-benefit for regular street applications.
