Damn that was good, this multi-opinion octane/fuel debate. Guess I'll be pumping 94 since I'm going APR next month

Here Ultra 94 is "Premium"... when I was in Kuwait, the "cheapie" stuff was 94... the premium was 98.

that was prob 98 RON

just like in europe it's 95 & 98.. which is like 90-91 93-94

so yeah the cheap gas is better then our 87.. but the 98 that people see is really 93-94 octane

94 = faster, even if you're not tuned for it. Your Audi ECU can take advantage of a little more octane. Reality is that it's ideally running 92-93 anyway. 91 is ****.

sorry to burst your bubble but its been pretty much proven that Shell 91 will perform the same as 94.

You've seen a stock ECU pulling timing due to knocking on 91 octane? On a stock vehicle, I'd say the only time you're getting knock on 91 is if something else is wrong with it – IAT too high, fuel temp issues, engine bay too hot, plug gaps, coilpack issues, etc. – and not because the fuel can't handle the conservative compression ratio of an OEM engine.

I'm not sure if you're making this statement with some implicit conditions in mind, but it's incorrect as is. As long as the ratings are accurate, with the correct tuning you will always be able to make more power on the higher-octane rated fuel. If you meant for a stock vehicle, only then is your statement correct.

You never need to use gasoline that has a higher octane rating than what is recommended by you car manufacturer.
The only thing you will gain by using a higher octane fuel than is required is a bigger dent in your wallet.
You will definitely not receive higher mileage figures from using it.
It will not clean your engine any better than the required octane rated fuel.

Gasoline is essentially a shared commodity, often stored in common containers until it is purchased by a major retailer. After that, the retailer treats the gas with a specific additive, thereby giving the fuel its brand identity. But are these additives just a dosage of marketing hype?

Top Tier gasoline was developed in 2004 to go beyond the minimum standard for detergent additives to better protect increasingly sophisticated engines from carbon buildup and deposits on the intake valves—which can result in a rough idle, acceleration hesitation, knocking/pinging, and reduced fuel economy. Over the past 20 years, engines have become far more precise, operating under tighter tolerances and at higher compression ratios, while targeting cleaner emissions and improved fuel economy. To achieve these goals, eight automakers—Audi, BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, and Volkswagen—have united in support of Top Tier gas, specifically recommending it to their owners with the goal of preserving their engines’ original performance and emissions over time.

When a participating retailer sells Top Tier fuel, all octane grades from regular to premium gasoline and diesel must adhere to the Top Tier standards. So, it is not necessary for drivers to upgrade to premium to gain the cleansing benefits.
Top Tier Retailers76, Aloha Petroleum, Amoco, ARCO, Beacon, BP, Breakaway, Break Time, Cenex, Chevron, CITGO, Conoco, Costco, CountryMark, Diamond Shamrock, Entec, Esso, Express Mart, Exxon, Fast Fuel, HFN, Hele, Holiday, Kwik Star, Irving, Kirkland Signature, Kwik Star, Kwik Trip, Marathon, Metro Petro, MFA, Mobil, Ohana Fuels, Phillips 66, PUMA, QT, Quik Trip, Road Ranger, Shamrock, Shell, Sinclair, Sunoco, SuperAmerica, SuperFuels, Texaco, Valero, Value America, Wow, and Win Win.

Unless you really enjoy throwing away your money, don’t buy higher octane than the manufacturer recommends. That applies to both new and older vehicles.
