Thumbs up 2004 B6 A4 downpipe replacement?

Hey guys,
A few days ago my car started making a really really loud sound.....turns out the downpipe is broken and needs to be replaced.
Midas is quoting me $500 roughly but the only issue is that they don't have part. They will try to find one and let me know....
I have 3 questions:

1. Is there a risk in not getting this fixed? If so, what? I kind of like the sound but I don't want to cause any damage to the car...
2. Where is the best place to get this done?
3. $500 quote from Midas seems steep? Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance
Saleem

Well if you take a look on ECS, their OEM replacement is $299. If you could do it yourself you would save some there. http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B6_A4-...aust/Downpipe/

As far as not repairing it, having a leak around the down pipe with exhaust fumes close to the intake of your cabin air may give you a bad headache. I'm not saying it will kill you but you may smell fumes.

Do you have an independent mechanic that you normally bring your car to? I would get a second and third quote. You could also try and source the part out yourself then have them install it for you without the mark up that always happens with every piece a shop sells.

Its probably on the flex that needs to be changed, I doubt there is a hole in the downpipe itself.

x2 mines been done twice now and I think its starting to leak again, its about $150 to get a new flexpipe welded in to your existing downpipe, $500 even with a few hrs labour seems steep, book time for a catalytic converter replacement is 1.5hrs on a 1.8t so a downpipe replacement cant be much more.

Actually if you are going to pay that much for just the downpipe then spend a couple hundred more for a stainless steel cat back exhaust with a lifetime warranty. There is a great thread on another forum for an eBay seller for a 1.8T Cat Back for around $360 and people on the forum are loving it. If I needed a new muffler or something was wrong with my exhaust, this is what I would do. I don't know if there is an application for the B6 but it's worth checking out. Here is a link to the thread. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...s-exhaust-1.8t

Good luck on your decision.
