Question 2003 A4 1.8TQ Turbo

Just wondering how long the turbo's in these cars are supposed to last? Heard somewhere that they start to quit at 100,000KM's?

Anywhere from 0KM to 500,000KM. The K K K turbos are very stout units, but the lifespan could be anywhere in the aforementioned range. It's impossible for anyone to give you a definitive answer - especially for your specific turbo and vehicle - so the best that you can do is learn to care for it properly. Furthermore, anyone driving a turbo vehicle should realize that it is another possible fault in the system, and accept the fact that they do sometimes break.

Tips:

More important
- Proper oil
- Sufficient warm-up
- Sufficient Cool-down
- Boost gauge to monitor pressure levels

Somewhat less important
- Clean, sealed air intake to eliminate foreign-object damage
- Regularly inspect for oil and/or coolant leaks
- EGT gauge to monitor Exhaust Gas Temperature

HI I posted a few years ago about my 2007 A4 having a high oil consumption. After seals being replaced and being told this was normal (1L/1000km) I kept on the program. Recently, at 105000 km my car started to make some weird noises. I brought it to the mechanic and he had to replace the serpentine belt with tensionnors (apparently these should last to 190000km) and now have just replaced my Turbo (almost $3000.00) ouch. Guess what they found in my intercooler? Leaked oil!!!!! My mechanic now tells me he believes it is only a matter of time until my new turbo goes again. When he called and asked at the dealership Owasco Audi about it they responded that they never have turbo problems, but did have a replacement turbo in stock. What a joke of customer service this company has since of course, now my car is no longer under warranty and I listened to them originally. All who are using oil may want to have these mechanical parts checked now. Do not give in to their comments of this is normal!
From a very dissatisfied customer.

For it to crap out at 100k is from negligence. A turbo needs to be properly cooled and have oil circulated after each hard use.. Failure to do so will eat the bearings quickly. The great invention of turbo timers is a great way of taking care of a turbo. I've never owned a turbo audi and not sure if they even come stock with timers.

Take care of the turbo and it will last many more k's than what you have heard.
