Hi, I have an '02 A4 Avant1.8T and the econo button (light) won't turn
off and the AC won't engage. I've tried the defrost and using the auto
button, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what might be
causing this?
Thanks for the help!

The ECON light indicates that the AC compressor is off. Even if you have
the heat set to AUTO The AC is off if the ambient temperature is lower
than 37F degrees.

I thought it means that the A/C has a fault. What does the A4 manual
say?

the econ light either means there is a fault with the a/c system
or just that the refrigarant in the a/c system is to low for the a/c to work just need to recharge it for the light to go out .

I confirm.
I solved the econ light problem with a recharge of refrigerant.
My mechanic used a colored-gas... this system help you to check if in your car there's a little hole in refrigerant circuit.
normally there are 2 causes of econ light is on (if you don't press it
)
1- normal discharge (4/5 years from the last recharge)
2- micro-hole in the circuit..
fortunatly for me it was only a normal time maintenance...
total costs: 80 euros (100$ approx.)
now, after two years, all works good
