I'd say the size is limited only by what you can afford ... I've seen pics of A4's with 20's - tires in that size would be a fortune. Avants tend to carry off the larger wheels better than sedans IMO.

17's are no problem and 18's as well as 19's look great but the larger you go the less rubber you will have separating the wheel from the road so the ride and wheel protection is affected. Also, wheel gap between the tire and fender appears more pronounced with lower profile tires which is why many lower their cars.

If you can find a lightweight wheel you will recognize an improvement in ride, accelleration and handling over a smaller, heavier wheel. Good Luck !

You might be interested in these:

VW MK5 GTI Huffs - Halifax Cars & Vehicles - Kijiji Halifax

They are located in Halifax and I was thinking that they would look awesome on my A6 Avant. I'm not entirely sure if they would fit Audis. But on my dark gray (Cashmere Gray Pearl, I think), they would look kind of sinister!!

17" will be no problem...I think i've seen a few people with 19's on a B5 but IMO it looks damn tacky and Canadian roads aren't really built for it, you'll be spending a fortune on rubber and rim repairs.

I've heard of B5's clearing 20s. Personally, I wouldn't go over 18s. Just make sure you get the right offset and that the rims clear the brakes and the control arms. The rest is personal preference.

For an idea of stock sizes, look on the placard inside the fuel door.

ya 17s are a stock wheel size for the B6 and so are 18s for the USP so your going to have no issues up to 19, and then 20s you start getting into issues with tires(cost a fortune!!) 18s look really nice over all.
