Thanks for joining the forum and welcome. Tough question to ask the members here since the cars are only a year apart and we no other information to differentiate them.

Since you're looking for such old cars, I would think the condition and how the vehicle was maintained would be far more important than 98 vs 99.

Yes buy the condition not the year of the car.

there two reasons for me to like 99 over 98.
99 has one piece headlights and the new double din stereo design.

there only thing i like more on the 98 over 99 is the orange taillights.
I hate red turn signals. Sometimes just can't differentiate if they are flashing or tapping brakes.

Yah I completely agree on previous maintenance which I'll be looking into, and yah I decently was leaning towered the 99 for the reason of the double din.

Buy none!
Find a real audi with proper engine like 2.8 or 3.0.
1.8 is marketing response to **** Acura 1.6. The engine is from Jetta that weighs 1 ton and Audi is heavier by 50 percent. 1.8 is not a real thing and you will be slowpoking on QE2.
They also made 1100 cc for the French market to be driven on le roads da localle bZzZzzzzzzz
If you want small engine Golf is your car.
1.8 is a disapointment and you save marginal on gas.
2.8 gives you the kick the power the kiss my ass attitude on the road and the respect of the American Muscle Car owners
Yayks!
The people who bought it now have half VW and half Audi.
Better to get VW and save some cash.
I strongly caution you against the problems with this engine since it works as it was pulling a trailer all the time. The engine was not made for Audi but for a small vehicle like Rabbit.

The best advice I can give you is to totally ignore everything this guy writes. Nothing wrong with the 1.8T, it has proven itself as a reliable engine.

I absolutely agree with hoeser. Do not listen to me listen to the first hand testimony.

Re: What should I buy 1998 Audi A4 1.8 or 1999 Audi A4 1.8

Adam, I can name about a dozen guys on this forum with 1.8T's or 2.0T's that will eat your 2.8 for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I actually do own a 3.2 A4 and I still recommend the 2.0 and 1.8 variants over any of the V6s because lets face it, the V6 isn't all that impressive for the extra money. I bought it because I got a good deal but I would have preferred the 2.0T.

Having a 2.8L V6 with what,190hp(?) is nothing to brag about - a solid engine? Yes, but its not the performance monster you make it out to be nor is it a whole lot peppier than a 1.8T. I seem to remember other posts where you brag about your V6 as being better than the B7 2.0T even though the 2.0T, bone stock, would pull your car in any gear... LOOK IT UP.

I'm just getting a little sick of you touting your opinion as fact when it RARELY is, and believe me I'm not the only one here that's annoyed with it. Stop giving people bad advice, there is nothing wrong with the 1.8T - it is a great engine, there is also nothing wrong with the 2.8 V6 but it's not a huge improvement in performance. You can get a reflash for a 1.8 that will put you in the same performance ballpark for a lot less money than opting for the V6.
