Default VAG-COM questions ?

Trying to understand how to use VAG-COM / VCDS.

I understand that Ross Tech changed the product name from VAG-COM to VCDS a few years ago.

Am I correct in assuming that getting a cheap compatible eBay cable (USD to OBDII) I could use the older version of VAG-COM 409.1, easily found on the internet. As my car is a 2001, I do not need the newest VCDS at all. I understand that I would have to buy the full version with the cable, but since it's a 12 year old vehicle I'd rather not, it the old version works fine for my 2001.

I would like to be able to diagnose trouble, yes but can I also take advantage of all other VAG-COM features too ?

Thanks,

With the cheap chineese cable and the old free version of VCDS software, you will be able to get the diagnostic/fault codes and you will get access to modify some modules but not as many as with the latest version. You will obviously not have any support from Ross Tech if you get in trouble....

I used this cheap chineese cable for 2 years before getting the real thing. Worked fine but I needed to upgrade.
