Default timing belt

I have an Audi A4 Quatro w/ manual tranny. Need to replace the timing belt but should i use a fairly reliable dealership or a passionate back yard mechanic. Cost savings is substantial. Also, is there a timing belt kit to buy somewhere? And lastly, water pump and tensioner are recommended to be replaced also, anything else recommended while engine apart?

Hi, there was a bunch of other threads about this but i guess it doesnt help you much since your in Cleveland. You should replace the timing belt, water pump, tensioners and the serpentine belt. Look for any shop that works on German cars. Not sure if you have a 3.0 or 1.8T. I found that some shops dont have the locking tool for the 3.0 motor and they dont bother aquiring it since it is not as common. In Canada you are looking at about 750-1100 dollars at an independent shop, but i know in States you guys get better deals. Good luck.

I agree with Just_G. Look for a shop that knows Audi's, check the cost at the dealer as well. If they're comparable, I'd go with the dealer, just because they can be held accountable. Good independent guys are a good bet, key word "good". Mine cost about$1200 Can at an independent here in Edmonton, Canada.

The good guys know what needs to be done, water pump, idlers etc. They can also check for leaky seals etc.

Get it done, the 1.8 is an interference engine, so if the belt breaks you've got a lot more to worry about.
