Default Tell me about the A4

Hey guys

I am new to this forum and want to get some info about the Audi A4s. I am currently a Honda Owner but want to make the switch to a pre-owned a4.

I am looking at 1999-2000 a4!

What is better 1.8t or 2.8?
Are they reliable cars?
What to look for when going to see the car?
Overall opinions?
Am I making the right decision?

thanks guys

Hey Baby Boi. I know you from the Vital
Motion forum. I'm from Guelph. I just bought a 2003 A4 1.8 Q. I am loving it. I made the switch from a RSX type S and I couldn't be happier. It's definately not as fast but is very fun to drive. Good luck.

Well "better" will depend on whether you want an engine that is great for modding and driving or an engine that is a little more sluggish but is more reliable in terms of not having to replace turbos or worry about them.

They are reliable cars so far as you get one that is in good condition and take care of it. Look for a car with complete maintenence records. Check the CV joints as well as ask if the timing belt service has been done depending on the mileage.

The most important part is an up to date maintenence record.

Good luck in your search.
Whether you are or not depends on you. I personally bought into Audi because of quattro as well as interior quality.

If you are thinking of taking it to a dealership for every little thing then you'd better have some cash lying around but if you can find a good indy shop in your area or DIY most things then you should be fine.

A CV joint for that car will run you about 140$ which is a bit above average. in my opinion you want to look at the suspension parts since upper and lower ball joints will run you around 400$ a piece give or take. The first thing you probably want to look at is exhaust since the only place that sells oem exhaust seems to be the dealer. I was surprised at how inexpensive brakes where, calipers run somewhere around 150$ expect to pay about average price for pads and rotors your water pump which i heard seems to go as the car gets older only cost around 35$. If your looking at a 5 speed like myself clutch kit is worth around 150$ and a new flywheel around 700$. I am working from memory but i think my numbers are reasonably close. labor is probably what will kill you if you dont work on the car yourself.

Hey whats up I remember you from vital also...

yeah man as long as all the maintenance is done the car is pretty reliable. Make sure timing belt/water pump were changed depending on the KMs. 1.8T has way more modding potential than the 2.8 and more fun to drive

I bought a 2004 A4 3.0 Quattro this past summer. I went with the 3.0 over the 1.8T because I'm used to driving a six. It's a great car, very smooth and I still have 2+ years of dealer warranty. My only regret is not getting the six speed!! I traded up from a Honda Accord. There is no comparison.

IMO, stay away from the 2.8. Its very thirsty, front end heavy and not very fast. I had a 2000 (5 speed) and it would blow away my mom's 2000 2.8 (tiptronic) in all respects. The 1.8 handled far better, felt more nimble and was definitely faster (had a chip and exhaust). It ran great and had no issues other than I need new wheel bearings at 50k.
