Unhappy Misfire cylinder #1 -- HELP NEEDED

If anyone can help that would be great.

VEHICLE: 1999 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro (103,700km) manual tranny.

Yesterday, out of no where I got a FLASHING CHECK ENGINE light and the car
started misfiring. So I hooked up the OBDII to check the code and it said
Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.

I then bought all new spark plugs and replaced them, reset the check engine code and
started the car, same problem Cyl. #1 misfire.

So then I switched the ignition coil from cylinder #2 and put it to #1 just to check if the coil is bad.. reset the check engine light and started the car, same problem Cyl #1 misfire.

So it's not the spark plugs, neither the coil pack.

** what can be the problem causing it to misfire on cyl #1 **

Thanks...

Check the ignition controll unit 4D0 905 351(may vary), which is on top of the air filter box(just remove the plastic cover, you'll see it), this one is often fail piece. this one's list price before tax is about $500. shop price about 110-170. good luck.

If your misfire came suddenly, it may be an electrical problem. Like pro said, ICM or a bad lead. I had misfire issues. I went through the whole gala of trying to find the misfire. It turned out be a dirty fuel injector. So if you're mechanically inclined, swap the injectors and rescan. And buy your own VAG-COM--about 15 bucks on ebay. works great on my car.

Thanks "PROJECTS"!

I took out my Ignition Control Module, tested it and it was dead. Bought a brand new one BOSCH for about $166 canadian they shipped it next day. Installed it and car runs better than ever... Thanks again for your help, appreciate it... you saved me lots of money by not having to take it to mechanics.

My pleasure.

And remember put some thermal grease in between the ICU and air box, like the thing used between cpu and fan. It's help a longer life for the ICU.

Not dielectric grease. It's thermal paste. Computer store has it, silver thermal paste would be better.

ok thanks I'll get that...

one more thing.. I just started having problems with my wipers they don't stop when they should..
they stop out of sequence wherever they want, most of the time somewhere in the middle of the
windshield..

is that a problem with the multifunction switch (wipers side)?? could that be taken out and the
contactors cleaned out for better contact or is the whole switch dying?

Thanks...

It's sounds like switch or motor. but I suspect motor more.

That switch can be completely disassembled, but you need take the steering wheel off, be careful the airbag and spiral wire(the plug is very fragile). also it's good time to clean the cruise control multifuntion switch(this one more dirty). and be careful some of the parts may jump away, also put some tape before spiral wire jump out, otherwise you'll need quite a patient put it back.

Motor isn't cheap at all, check all the wires before change it. Used will be good enough. I know a guy may have it. in case you need it, let me know.
