Exclamation HELP! A4 B5 Check Engine Blinking

Hey y'all,

So it was really cold here in Montreal over the weekend and as i left work to take the Highway, i get a yellow blink on my computer as if i'm missing Motor Oil..So i stop at shell, purchase some motor oil.

I turn the ignition on and next thing you know the engine starts shaking/vibrating really loud like it's about to break, don't know how else to describe the sound. As soon as i put it on Drive or Reverse, the car would stutter and the Check Engine light started to blink.

Had to tow the car to Laval and hoping this is not something major.

Anyone had a similar experience or can shed some light on the possible issue???

Would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I am going to take a stab and say it could be your Spark Plug/Ignition Coils.

But it would be better to pull the CEL codes to determine the real cause.

it's either a coilpack or icm. both no biggie to replace.

I had this problem in my B6. It turned out to be the coil packs.

I really don't know. Mine were replaced under a recall.

I think I spent around $150 on 4 new coils... which is a lot, apparently. The swap takes about 20 minutes to do, honestly (including new spark plugs), so the labour on JUST THAT should be reasonable.

If I were you, taking my car to a mechanic, I would want to see the trouble codes before I authorized any work though.

VCDS is ~$300 and well worth the cost to be able to pull the codes yourself and then decide how you want to proceed with repairs. A regular scanner wont give you the information that VCDS will.

Good luck and keep us posted.

yeah coils don't cost that much to replace.
anywhere from $100-$200 depending on the shop.

I have heard that some members keep a spare coil in the glove box.
