Exclamation Help!!!

Hello I am new to this site and am very pleased to be an audi owner. I previously had a 1996 FWD A4 2.8 and now got a 1997 A4 1,8T

heres my problem.

CAR STARTS GREAT, REVS UP NO PROBLEM

now!, when sitting in neutral and I rev up to 3500 it just cuts out and drops back to 1000rpm and runs fine!!! if I try to rev it up again, same thing, reaches 3500 nicely, and then cuts and drops automatically. If I floor it, it goes up and down between 1000 and 3500.

ALSOP!! as the rpms drop, the check engine also starts flashing and a hear a ticking or relay under the dash. can anyone please help me and let me know whta it could be.

I would feel really stupid if it was a rev limiter!

Sounds like the rev limiter but why would you want to go over 3500 rpm in neutral? That does not sound like its good for the engine

Scan for codes i dont think its the rev limiter as its set stock to 6800rpm and a flashing light can mean a misfire but its strange that it only does it in neutral.

Well, when its driving it does the same thing. I drive and it jerks when it reaches that rpm. Check engine only flashes when the rpms are dropping automatically

Ok if this happens while your driving there could be many things wrong, plugs, coils, cam sensor, try to borrow a code reader from someone and scan it then post all the codes that came up and i can try to help you solve the problem.
