Gas mileage
I have a 99.5 A4 1.8TQ
Anyone else getting ridiculously low gas mileage? I was at the shop, and they checked everything out and my car is "running as it should", but then I get such low kms per tank. I get 350 kms on a full tank on a good week. I've tried changing my driving habits, optimizing tire pressure, etc etc... anything I can think of, but nothing seems to be working. I'm starting to think 350 kms is normal on this car... any thoughts? |
Re: Gas mileage
wow, thats terible!!!!
i have a 2004 1.8t 6speed, and im getting about 600 city and 700 hwy. benifit of the doubt i take it pretty easy but for me to get only 350 i would have to beat the hit out of it none stop...and my cars chipped! |
Re: Gas mileage
2004 a4 1.8T Triptonic
I get 500-550kms on a full tank (80% highway, 20% city)... lets all share what does everyone get and may be we can benefit from members who are getting good mileage on their cars |
Re: Gas mileage
Yeah, it'd be interesting to know what everyone else is getting too...
But, I was more looking for ideas on what's wrong with my car. What are common things that cause low gas mileage?

Re: Gas mileage
350km per tank is poor: I could do better than that with my 3.0 B6 (heavier car, thirstier engine) while I lived in Vancouver. Have you checked if something is dragging on your car, eg, the brakes?
|
Re: Gas mileage
It's funny you ask that actually, haha... I was just talking to my performance shop mechanic, and asked him about my gas mileage thing, and he asked the same thing... if I had the handbrake up. But sadly, no.. it doesn't seem like it's something as simple as my brakes. I just had brake work done.
Does a worn clutch affect gas mileage by much?

Re: Gas mileage
do you smell a slight aroma of gas? for what ever reason you could be leaking gas. On my old car my O rings around the injectors went and i got half the gas milage.
i didnt smell gas all the time, but it would be as if i just drove by a gas station yet there was no gas station anywhere... |
Re: Gas mileage
Hmm... I didn't notice any, but wasn't really looking for it either. I'll give my car a sniff in a bit.
I do notice a slight burning smell when I open my hood after driving a bit. I heard it's the small amounts of oil burning, which is normal on turbo cars... ? Dunno how true this is though.

Re: Gas mileage
well you definitly will lose oil over time with a turbo car more so then a N/A car. There has to be something for you to get half the Km that i able to get.....
|
Re: Gas mileage
I havea 2006 A4 2.0TQ and I have horrible gas milage too. I get 480 km's when I drive normally. I drive like a maniac most of the time though so I usually end up only going about 440 km's on a tank and sometimes less.
|
Re: Gas mileage
your car being the newer model, i think it should get better mileage than this
i think 500 is average people get on an A4? (from audi dealership) |
Re: Gas mileage
i get 480-500 mixed driving, 600-650 highway only (if i put on the cruise and dont push it at all)
i expected alot better mileage out of a 1.8t six speed.... |
Re: Gas mileage
I get very poor milage because most city driving, roughly 440km's city and I took a 3 hour cruize to another city and then back no problem on one tnak of gas with 600km's so I am guessing I could have gone to 700-750 but within city I get terrible gas milage and I called Audi of Canada because I had a concern that there was something wrong witht he care etc. but they said that it was normal as it is a turbo car and on 60L they expect you to get 400-450 so it is weird on some cars I do a throtle body adjustment and this helps a bit
|
Re: Gas mileage
I'm getting around 500 per tank of stop-and-go city driving... so yeah, seems like something's got to be wrong there.
|
Re: Gas mileage
Well, my car is at the stealership right now, and I got them to check it out. They suggested doing a fuel filter change and injector cleaning first.
If it still doesn't work, then they suggested I look into the temp sensor. I'll let you guys know how it goes after I get my car back and go through my first tank. |
Re: Gas mileage
If you don't want to dump a mountain of money into the dealer's service department, you might try Blitzkrieg Autowerks near Commercial and Hastings...
|
Re: Gas mileage
I have a 2004 A4 3.0Q and get about 550 combined but I drive conservatively. Sounds crazy but make sure you dont have a neighbour syphoning from your tank. With the price of premium unleaded anything's possible.
|
Re: Gas mileage
I've heard good things about Blitzkrieg... unfortunately, they're not in a very convenient location.
I should find a day to give them a try though.

Re: Gas mileage
A full tank of gas on my avant 1.8 cvt with the wind behind me and on the highway driving like a granny shows a range of 890 km on the display.

Re: Gas mileage
OMG - I wish I could get mileage like that! I'm lucky to break 425km on highways.
And yours is the Avant too... heavier car. If there was a "jealous" smiley, this is where I'd insert it...

Re: Gas mileage
so thats what the display says...I have not actually confirmed that I can drive the full distance to an mt tank....
and it is a little motor and I don't drive it so hard as to have the turbo kick in all the time....me thinks... I have not modified this car in any way, |
Re: Gas mileage
I've got a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro and I get between 550-600kms a tank. That about 80% highway, bc highway though, when I drove through alberta and sask I'd get 650 or better
|
Re: Gas mileage
I have a 2003 1.8T A4 and I get about 600km normally. I'm drive into the city so it's about 50%/50% HW/City driving hours. Car is stock at this point.
Is there a way to change the display from KM's left in the tank to a mileage reading? |
Re: Gas mileage
i have a 2004 a4 six speed and i get about 740 to 750 a tank
|
Re: Gas mileage
Holy Shnikes! I wish I had that kind of mileage! That's more than double what I get...

Re: Gas mileage
Yeah I do about 600-700 if I'm driving nothing but highway, on a 5-speed B5 Front Trak.
|
Re: Gas mileage
after looking at this more closely last weekend going to the cottage 90 km/hour...used 45 litres to travel about 450 km....so uh 10L per 100 kms....so the instruments are way wrong...full tank should not yeild 850 plus kms...so a 60 L tank would yeild about 600 plus klicks...seems in line with what the others are saying.
2004 1.8 l A4 cvt front wheel drive avant p |
Re: Gas mileage
DO this and it should be more accurate
Throttle Body Alignment: put the key and put it into the position just before the starter turns (do not start the car) push the gas peddle all the way wait 3 seconds and turn the key all the way back but do not take it out, now release the gas peddle and wait 2 minutes! remove key than put it back in and start the car! you should notice a better response while pressing the gas do this once every few weeks! |
Re: Gas mileage
I have a 2007 A4 3.2 automatic and get great milage, depending on what roads can get 700kms to a tank
|
Re: Gas mileage
thanks for that...however I am perplexed as to why this adjustment would affect the instrumentation...

Re: Gas mileage
My is a quatro, who would but an Audi with only front wheel drive ??

Re: Gas mileage
Hmm, 2004 A4 3.0Q 6 speed manual. In town 370km/tank. But i drive it like Mario Andretti is chasing me. Not great mileage, but given my driving habits, I'm not complaining. When I behave myself, the mileage behaves too... :)
