Engine Check Light - Diagnostic
The Engine Check light came on, on my A4 a few days ago. It's on solid, not flashing.
Canadian Tire quoted $108 to pull the code.
What alternates do I have?
It appears I could buy an OBD2 (I think) Diagnostic Tool for roughly the same price, but how does this differ from a "VAG-COM"?
Additionally, from what I've been reading it seems possible to purchase a cable, hook it up to my laptop, and diagnose the car via the laptop?

Diagnostics tool will not show everything, the vag com has way more features and way more abilities than just a general diagnostics tool do yourself a favour and buy the vag-com as it will pay for itself the first time you use it and realize how many extra options you can add on with the vag-com. I don't know if that's the one I need, but wow.
Princess Auto has an OBD Tool for $99, and PartSource for $149 I think...
I just want to find out if the Engine Check is serious or not...
Yeah it is pricy but you might be able to fix it with the vag-com vs the obd II, you can also program in a lot of stuff or you can buy the canadian tire one check the code write it down clear it if possible and check into it return it and buy a vag com and be satisfied then
