OBD scanners are good but they only scan generic codes, you are better off with VAG-COM because it will do a lot more than any OBD scanner will. Not only can you program different options within your car it also gives you details as to why the item failed, gives you a snap-shot of the failures, and allows you to do data logging which a lot of generic scanners fail to do. They probably cost a bit more but for the extras I think it is a wise investment, I have had mine for about 10 years now and it has saved me a lot of work in that time.
