BUYING and need advise A4 1.8T vs 2.8 vs 2.7biturbo????
looking endlessly for a nice A4 under $8000 in the Vancouver/Vancouver Island area....
Friend of mine said to stay with the 1.8T as it "was" or "is" one of the best motors ever built....
Question: Is the 1.8T a way better motor than the 2.8??
What are some common things to look for when purchasing a late 90's A4?
beside whether timing belt, o2 sensor and cats have been sone????
So far im looking at:
2001 A4 1.8T 115,000km ($8000 can)
1996 A4 2.8 really nice shape with 19" rims ($5200can)
2000 A6 2.7 biturbo amazing ex show car with NICE 19" rims($8000can)
what do you think about the maintenance costs between these 3 motors?????
wife doesnt want me to buy the 2.7Bi Turbo due to costs
Is it true that the 1.8T parts cost less cause they are interchangable with VW etc
sorry for all the questions boys
Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
Jaybob
1 more Question.... is there any way to tell if the timing bely has been done i they dont have reciept???

$5200 for a 96 seems pretty steep, unless its got really low kms. if you're looking to mod the engine go for the 1.8t as it has lots of options for that. maintenance costs are fairly high for all audis, and when something goes wrong expect to pay a lot. as for the timing belt, get a mechanic to take a look and see what he says.

Re: BUYING and need advise A4 1.8T vs 2.8 vs 2.7biturbo????
i would go with one that is lower k and well maintained. So see if you can get ahold of any service record for those cars that you are looking at. Personally i would go with this one that you listed in your first message, 2001 A4 1.8T 115,000km ($8000 can) cause it is true that the 1.8 is more fun to live with

Re: BUYING and need advise A4 1.8T vs 2.8 vs 2.7biturbo????
Hi J,
I see you're looking at an A4. I just bought a 2002 A4 avant for $10,200. It had 117,000 kms on it and in great shape. With looking around (I drive my co-workers nuts with my searching and researching) I think I did really well.
I don't know what the west coast pricing is like, but around here I'd say you're looking at a slightly older model and probably a min. of 160000 kms.
I have a 1.8t and love it. Even with the whole family in it acceleration is great and the car feels "peppy". Plus, I understand that there are more mods you can do with a 1.8 that will get you up to nearly 300 scary hp!!
I would also agree that the a4 you mentioned sounds like an awesome deal! Grab it!
Hope that helps!

Re: BUYING and need advise A4 1.8T vs 2.8 vs 2.7biturbo????
Well Jay this is outside my realm of knowledge for sure. It definitely looks nice and has been tuned up to the hilt. I'd call a shop and get a concrete pricing on that torque converter job just so you know what you're up against. One word of (totally hypocritical) advice is get rid of the emotions with the purchase. If you don't get this one, another will come up. There's always another car. I almost bought a Saab 9-2x (a Saab version of the Subaru Imprezza wagon awd) before finding my a4 and I'm glad I didn't let my emotional side make me jump on it on the first test drive. It was a nice car, but no where near the a4.
