Was it a rear caliper? Come to think of, my buddy had the same issue.. Couldn't get any brake pressure and had spongy. We bled it over and over again thnking it was air in the line.. The caliper seemed to work.. I actually was leading to the point i thought it was master.. Turned out to be a bad rear caliper... Changed it, all issue went away.. Why I didn't think of this I don't know.....

If they are still spoungy.. Perhaps another bleed won't hurt.. He disconnected the brake line to put the caliper on.. perhaps theres still some air in there.. worth a try. You did mention there has been no brake fluid change.. could be a good time!
